August 26, 2007 -- Scorpions final Group Eight tie in the 2008 Nations Cup qualifier against Algeria is gaining momentum with the invitation of several foreign-based players who are expected to start arriving early next month.

The Gambia are billed to take on Algeria on Sunday, September 9, in Banjul. The Scorpions need at least a 3-goal victory and hope that Guinea slip to visiting Cape Verde in the same weekend to stand a chance of qualifying for their first-ever Nations Cup final in Ghana 2008.

Ahead of the make-or-break cracker, the Gambia Football Association has already invited over ten foreign players, among whom are the England-based forward Edrissa Sonko, Mustapha Jarju and Assan Jatta from Belgian SK Lierse, the two former Under 20 aces: Ousman Jallow and Ebrima Sohna, goalkeeper Musa Bajaha, Abdou Jammeh, Mathieu Mendy, Pa Saikou Kujabi, Njogu Demba, Paco Corr, Lamin Conateh and Modou Jagne.

Group Eight remains the most confused group among the lots with all the four teams (Gambia, Algeria, Cape Verde and Guinea) having the chance to finish on eight points.

And with the three best losers already known, only one side now stands the chance to qualify from the deadly Group which currently has the Syli Nationales of Guinea as the leaders on 8 points. Algeria are trailing the leaders, due to goal difference, while The Gambia also enjoy a considerable goal advantage over Cape Verde with both sides having five points in the bag.

August 28, 2007 -- Algeria’s national coach Jean-Michel Cavalli will leave the team on September 10th, immediately after the African Cup of Nations qualifier against Gambia in Banjul, Liberte reported. His departure will not be influenced by the result of the decisive match for Algeria, whose chances were hurt by a surprising home defeat by Guinea on June 16th. El Khabar reported on Monday that Algerian Football Federation President Hamid Hedadj would have preferred to keep Cavalli on for another year, but faces pressure from his opponents, who wanted his dismissal after a 0-0 draw against Cape Verde in Praia and Cavalli’s statement on the French television after the friendly with Brazil, which the Federation believes harmed the reputation of the Algerian team. According to the paper, Hedadj said he is not ready to hire a "big coach" as the federation cannot afford a coach like Philippe Troussier or Roland Coubis. Reportedly, Rabah Sâadane is a possible replacement.
