24 years ago today it all started ... Algeria 2-1 Germany with goals from Rabah Madjer and Lakhdar Belloumi:

1982 - Germany lose to Algeria 2-1 in a group game that is one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history. The result leads to one of the most shameful events in World Cup history as Germany and Austria conspire in their final group game to cheat Algeria out of a place in the next round.

Knowing that a one, or two-goal victory for Germany in their final group game against the Austrians would be enough to see both sides through, the teams practically stop playing after Horst Hrubesch scored for Germany in the 10th minute.
