Last week Teresa Lara, ISAF Vice President, visited Algeria who are to host the African Games 11 – 23 July 2007. During her trip Lara met the Algerian Minister of Youth and Sports who promised to support sailing as this is the first time this sport has been included in the programme of the Regional Games.
The ISAF Vice-President also met Mr Larfaoui who is an IOC member, President of the International Swimming Federation and Chairman of the African Confederations Union. Lara was pleased to be introduced to the Director General of the African Games Organising Committee and the President of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games.
Lara didn’t miss the opportunity to meet the Executive Committee of the Algerian Sailing Federation, the competitors, coaches and race officials involved with the games.
Finally, she visited a sailing club in the surroundings of the city of Algiers.
This visit will certainly have a good impact on the promotion of sailing in Algeria and will hopefully for the basis for a successful event next year.

All Africa Games: 'Mission accomplished'
December 20, 2006 - - THE hosts of the 9th All-Africa Games, Algeria, are doing everything to ensure they host and win the quadrennial continental multi-sport summit billed for the north African nation in July 2007, hotsportslive.com reports. Not only has the country succeeded in removing hockey, baseball and softball from the sports in which medals will be competed for, the organizers have also been able to remove powerlifting and wheelchair table tennis which fetches a lot of medals for Nigeria. Nigeria swept to her first triumph in the All-Africa Games on the back of a solid performance by physically -challenged powerlifters and table tennis players in the special sports section when she hosted the continent three years ago.
“It is a plot that we are studying very well but we cannot do anything about it because host nations have the chance to select the sports they have facilities for, which enabled many to leave out sports they know some other countries are good at. That is what has happened”, said a top official of the Sports Ministry.
A meeting in the Algerian capital last week came up with these decisions that have left Nigerian administrators flustered. The same meeting also agreed to move the date of the games back by one week, to July 11-25, instead of from July 5 that was earlier on the cards.
Algeria gained independence from France on July 5, 1962 and loves to grab every opportunity to remember that particular date with glee.
Another Nigerian top official said: “This has now compelled that we must sit down and do a thorough work. We cannot leave anything to chance. The athletes that we’re going to take to Algiers must start training hard from January, and we must look at those areas in which we are good and strive to be better, and look at the areas in which we are not so good and try to improve”.

The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Jacques Rogge, has just completed a two-day visit to Algiers, the host city of the 9th All Africa Games next July. It was the second visit to the Algerian capital for President Rogge, after one in 2004. During his stay, President Rogge was received by the President of the Algerian Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, with whom he discussed the organisation of the All Africa Games, as well as the development of sport in the country and the role it can play, particularly in teaching young people values such as respect, friendship and the search for excellence. He also discussed these subjects with the Prime Minister, Abdelaziz Belkhadem. Accompanied by Julio César Maglione, IOC member in Uruguay, and Mustapha Berraf, the Algerian NOC President, President Rogge attended a gala evening during which Mustapha Larfaoui, IOC member and President of the International Swimming Federation (FINA), was awarded the Order of Merit by the Mayor of Algiers and honoured by sports and government representatives. President Rogge concluded his visit to Algeria with a meeting with the presidents of the national federations and members of the NOC General Assembly.
The Olympic values in Algerian schools
As the sports movement is above all an educational movement, the Algerian NOC has launched a campaign to raise awareness of the Olympic values among children, using the National Olympic Academy. In this connection, an inter-ministerial/NOC agreement on introducing the Olympic values in schools was officially signed on Tuesday 19 December at a ceremony at the Cité des Sciences in Algiers, in the presence of President Rogge and the ministers of National Education; Post, Information Technology and Communication; Professional Training and Education; and Youth and Sport.
For President Rogge, this commendable initiative illustrates that today, more than ever, “sport has an essential educational role to play in our societies, and at all levels, from school sport to elite sport and mass sport. We have a responsibility”, President Rogge added, “to show by example that sport teaches respect for ourselves and others, the quest for excellence in all we do and, above all, an attitude based on friendship and peace.”
Algiers: Host of the 2007 All Africa Games
Another subject on the agenda for President Rogge was the 9th All Africa Games. After hosting the third edition in 1978, Algeria is getting ready, 27 years later, to stage the ninth edition of the biggest sports event on the African continent. From 11 to 23 July 2007, almost 9,500 athletes and leaders will be there from the 53 NOCs of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA). The Games programme features competitions in 21 Olympic sports, three non-Olympic sports and three Paralympic sports. The 10th edition of the All Africa Games will taken place in 2011 in Lusaka (Zambia).

Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), has expressed confidence in Algeria's ability to organise the 2007 African Games, which will be held between July 11th and 23rd. Rogge said the continental games were an important event because they let athletes test their abilities and improve their performance. The IOC president was speaking on the last day of his three-day visit to Algeria, which ended Wednesday.
