The Algerian Fencing Federation announced Monday (March 19th) that Algiers will host the Sabre World Cup tournament for senior men and women on Friday and Saturday. Some 63 men and 50 women from 21 counties will take part in the event. Eleven Algerian athletes will represent the country in the tournament, to be held at the Mohamed Boudiaf Olympic complex.

France's Julien Pillet, Olympic champion from Athens 2004, and American Mariel Zagunis won the titles in the men's and women's fencing events respectively at the Sabre World Cup held Friday (March 23rd) and Saturday in Algiers. In the finals, the Frenchman defeated American Timothy Morehouse, while Zagunis overcame Polish Jozwiak Bogna.

Algerian fencer Khelfaoui wins gold in Kuwait
October 26, 2007 -- Algeria's Anissa Khelfaoui won a gold medal in foil on Wednesday (October 24th) in the under-17 event at the Arab Junior Fencing Championship, underway in Kuwait from October 23rd to October 31st, APS quotes a statement of the Algerian Fencing Federation as saying. Algeria is competing in the tournament with five fencers.

April 18, 2008 -- Casablanca will host the African Fencing Championships from April 25th - 28th, with the participation of a number of countries including Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Senegal, South Africa, DR Congo, Niger, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso. The continental competition will be preceded by a qualifying tournament for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

August 6, 2009 -- Fencers from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia are in Dakar for the 9th African Fencing Championships, which kicked off on Wednesday (August 5th). Some 190 fencers from 15 countries are competing in the 5-day event.

June 1, 2010 -- In September, Tunisia will host the 10th African Nations Fencing Championships. Senegal, Mali, Nigeria, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Togo, Cote d'Ivoire, DR Congo, Burkina Faso, Niger, South Africa, Botswana, Cameroon, Gabon, Benin and Namibia are expected to participate.
