June 7, 2008 (BEIJING) -- Australia was able to overcome mistakes and weary legs to defeat Algeria 25-22, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20 on the sixth day of the Olympic Men's Volleyball qualification tournament, which is being held in Tokyo, Japan.
The Asian champions are now 3-3 in the tournament; this was the fourth loss in a row for the Algerians, dropping their tournament record to 2-4.
"I think at times both teams were a little error-prone. Our guys were a little physically tired after last night," said Australian head coach Russell Borgeaud, referring to last night's defeat by Japan.
"Credit to Algeria," he added, as reported by Fivb.org, "they had some outstanding players and made us work very hard for the victory."
Australian captain Ben Hardy conceded that it wasn't his team's best game, but the victory kept alive their hopes for a spot in the Beijing Olympics. "[I'm] happy to get another win in the tournament and keep us in the race in theory for a ticket for Beijing," he said. "The purpose was to recover from yesterday's game against Japan, and this gives us a chance still."
