USM Alger suffers second ACL loss

March 4, 2008 -- USM Alger suffered its second defeat in the Arab Champions League when it lost 1-0 to Syria's al-Taliya on Monday (March 3rd) in Algiers. The Algerians lost another home game against Egypt's el-Jaish on February 18th. The loss seriously jeopardised USMA's chances of advancing to the semis. The team has one match remaining against group leaders Wydad Casablanca in Morocco.

In other Group B play on Monday, Wydad drew 0-0 with Egypt's el-Jaish in Cairo. Wydad tops the group standings with ten points, ahead of USMA, el-Jaish and al-Taliya, with five points each.

Raja Casablanca will host Syria's al-Majd and ES Setif will host Jordan's al-Faisaly for Group A matches on Wednesday. Al-Faisaly currently tops the group's standings with eight points, ahead of Raja with five points and ES Setif and al-Majd with two points each. Raja and ES Setif have each played one match less than the other group members.

« Par principe, je démissionne »

Mercredi 5 mars 2008 -- Au lendemain de la défaite (0-1) de l’USMA en coupe arabe, le coach usmiste, Ali Fergani, est revenu sur la déconvenue de son équipe et sa démission. Ecoutons-le : « A mon humble avis, l’équipe n’a pas fourni un mauvais match, malgré la défaite qui compromet nos chances de qualification au prochain tour. Par rapport aux dernières sorties, les joueurs se sont bien battus. Malheureusement, le mauvais sort s’est acharné sur notre équipe. Nous avons péché en attaque, faute de réalisme devant. La présence de Bourahli nous aurait permis de concrétiser les occasions qui se sont présentées à nous. Les joueurs ont bien réagi après les dernières contre-performances. » Abordant la question de son retrait, il dira : « En entraîneur responsable et homme de convictions, j’avais le devoir de réagir face à la situation difficile que traverse l’équipe. Me retirer, me paraît être logique. J’ai démissionné par principe, même si dans le contrat qui me liait au club, il n’est pas spécifier expressément que l’USMA devait gagner la coupe arabe. Par contre, verbalement je m’étais entendu avec le président Saïd Allik sur cet objectif à atteindre. Je tiens à souligner qu’après la défaite face à l’équipe égyptienne et l’annonce du retrait de Saïd Allik, j’ai exprimé ma solidarité avec lui et évoqué mon départ que la direction du club a refusé. Aujourd’hui, par principe, je quitte mes fonctions après la défaite de lundi. Le football est ainsi fait et j’accepte ses règles », souligne le désormais ex-coach de l’USM Alger.

USM Alger coach resigns after ACL loss to Syria

March 5, 2008 -- USM Alger coach Ali Fergani announced his resignation following his team's 0-1 loss to Syria's at-Taliya in an Arab Champions League match on Monday (March 3rd). "On principle, I quit," local press quoted him as saying, adding that he considers the defeat a personal failure. According to Liberté, Mustapha Aksouh has been appointed as Fergani's replacement until the end of the season.

ES Setif advances to ACL semis

March 7, 2008 -- Algeria's ES Setif advanced to the semi-finals of the Arab Champions League (ACL) after defeating Jordan's al-Faisaly 2-1 on Wednesday (March 5th) in Setif. The goals for the Algerian team were scored by Farid Touil in the 89th minute and Ivorian striker Remy Adico nine minutes into injury-time. Also on Wednesday, Raja Casablanca tied 0-0 with Syria's al-Majd. Al-Faisaly and ES Setif currently share the top position in the group standings with eight points each, followed by Raja with six points and al-Majd with three. On March 12th Raja Casablanca will travel to Amman. On March 18th, ES Setif will play in Damascus.
