Algiers, August 13, 2007 (APS)- Algeria snatched eight medals (3 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze), finishing in sixth position, at the 8th edition of the Junior African Athletics Championships, a four-day event which wrapped up Sunday in the 4 August Stadium, in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso).

Algerian athlete Mourad Mouaci alone reaped two medals, one gold and one silver. He won the gold medal in the decathlon event with 6604 points, whereas he got the silver in the 1500 m event.

Algeria's other two gold medals were won by Sief Islam Temacini (triple jump) and Amokrane Katia (Heptathlon).

Sief Islam got the first position through a 15.58 m jump, ahead of Kenyan Kemei Edwin (14.88 m) and Tunisian Mohamed Amine (14.83 m).

His compatriot Amokrane Katia topped the Heptathlon event with a total of 4379 points, ahead of two of Burkina Faso's athletes, namely Traore Korotim and Bagabila Emmanuel.

The two silver medals were won by Djerfaoui Amine (10 km walk) and Larbi Bouraada (pole vault).

Nadjim Manceur (800 m) and Haliche Sonia (hammer throw, women) reaped bronze medals. Menaceur ran 800 m in 1:48.20, behind the two Kenyans, David Ridishia (1:46.41) and Leonard Kibet (1:47.95).

Haliche was placed third in hammer event, largely dominated by Egyptian Noura Abdel Zakaria (42.84 m) while the silver medal was won by Libyan Aboud Abtechal.

The 8th African Championships of Ouagadougou was distinguished by a dual between Kenya's athletes and South Africa's. The 9th edition will take place in Seychelles, in 2009.
