      - Nage no Kata 投の形 (Throwing forms)
      - Katame no Kata 固の形 (Grappling forms)
    • Kime no Kata 極の形 (Old style self-defence forms)
    • Kodokan Goshin Jutsu 講道館護身術 (Modern self-defence forms)
    • Ju no Kata 柔の形 (Forms of "gentleness")
    • Itsutsu no Kata 五の形 (The five forms)
    • Koshiki no Kata 古式の形 (Ancient forms)
    • Seiryoku Zen'yō Kokumin Taiiku no Kata 精力善用国民体育の形 (Maximum-efficiency national physical education kata)
    • Go no sen no kata 後の先の形 ('Forms of Counterthrowing' Kata ) [Not officially recognised by the Kodokan]
