CHAN prelims kick off

March 28, 2008 -- The preliminary round of the first-ever African Nations Championships (CHAN) kicks off over the weekend with the first leg matches. CHAN is the newest continental football tournament organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). It is open exclusively to players from the national championships. Twenty-two countries, divided into six geographic zones, will take part in the preliminary round. One team from each zone will qualify for the finals. The Southern zone will qualify two teams.

In the Northern zone, Libya will face Tunisia in Tripoli. In the West Zone Gambia will host Mauritania. The return matches have been fixed for April 11th-13th. Morocco and Algeria have received byes from the preliminaries and will begin in the first round. As hosts of the finals, scheduled for February 22nd–March 8th, 2009, Cote d’Ivoire has automatically qualified.

Libya ties Tunisia, Mauritania draws with Gambia

March 31, 2008 -- Libya tied Tunisia 1-1 on Sunday (March 30th) in Tripoli in a preliminary round, leg one match of the first-ever African Nations Championships (CHAN). The return leg is scheduled for April 12th in Tunisia. Mauritania also drew 1-1 with Gambia in Banjul on Saturday. CHAN is open exclusively to players from the national championships. One team from six geographical zones will qualify for the finals, set for February 22nd–March 8th, 2009 in Côte d’Ivoire. Morocco and Algeria have received byes from the preliminaries and will begin in the first round.

Algeria, Morocco to clash in CHAN qualifiers

April 7, 2008 -- Morocco will play Algeria in a round two African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifying match. Both teams received byes to the second round. They play their first leg match in Algiers on May 2nd and their second leg in Morocco on May 17th or 18th. CHAN, the newest competition organised by CAF, is meant exclusively for players from their countries' national leagues.

Libya, Mauritania advance to CHAN next round

April 14, 2008 -- Libya's national soccer team qualified for the next round of the first-ever African Nations Championships (CHAN), after defeating Tunisia 6-5 on penalties on Sunday (April 13th) in Sousse. The first leg in Tripoli ended with a 1-1 draw. The Tunisian goal was scored by Houcine Jaber.

Mauritania tied 0-0 with Gambia Saturday in Nouakchott in the second leg of the preliminary round. The first leg in Banjul finished with a 1-1 draw. Mauritania advances to the first round on away goals.

The first edition of the final phase of the Championship African Nations reserved for players operating in the local championship will be held in February 2009 in Cote d'Ivoire. Morocco and Algeria, who received byes from the preliminaries, will oppose each other in the first round.

Mauritius joins Egypt in quitting inaugural CHAN

April 20, 2008 -- Mauritius has joined Egypt in withdrawing from the inaugural edition of the African Nations Championship for locally-based players, according to organisers Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Egypt pulled out to enable it concentrate on the joint qualifying series for the 2010 World Cup and Nations Cup, but no reasons have yet been given for Mauritius' withdrawal.

CAF is expected to penalise both teams over the decision.

Egypt and Mauritius are among the 16 teams that drew a bye into the first round, and are expected to join the qualification series starting next month.

The others are Morocco, Algeria, Nigeria, Senegal, Mali, Cameroon, Guinea, DR Congo, Sudan, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Cote d'Ivoire has qualified automatically as host of the first edition, scheduled for Feb 22nd to March 8th 2009.

The African Nations Championship was announced September 11th 2007 in an effort to strengthen national competitions.

Morocco's Fathi calls up 22 players for CHAN clash with Algeria

April 21, 2008 -- National team interim manager Jamal Fathi called up 22 local league players for a practice at Maamoura on Wednesday (April 23rd) as part of Morocco's preparation for the African Nations Championship (CHAN). The list includes seven FAR Rabat players. Others are from Olympique Khouribga, Wydad Casablanca, Raja Casablanca, HUSA, Difaa El Jadida, Moghreb Tetouan, KAC Kenitra, Moghreb Tetouan and Moghreb Fes. Morocco will play Algeria in a round two CHAN qualifier, with the first leg to be held in Algiers on May 2nd and the second leg in Morocco on May 17th or 18th. CHAN 2009 :
Heddane fait le point

Lundi 28 Avril 2008 -- La rencontre Algérie-Maroc, prévue samedi à Koléa pour le compte du match aller des qualifications pour le Championnat d'Afrique des nations (CHAN-2009 réservé aux joueurs locaux) est un «derby maghrébin» à négocier avec «lucidité et un mental d'acier», a affirmé hier l'entraîneur algérien Mustapha Heddane. «C'est un derby entre deux formations de nations voisines. La rivalité sportive existe bien sûr. Je pense qu'il faut avoir un mental d'acier dans ce genre de rencontre et essayer d'avoir un ascendant psychologique sur l'adversaire», a indiqué Heddane lors d'un point de presse tenu à Alger en marge du stage de l'équipe algérienne A en prévision de cette rencontre face au Maroc.

«Nous avons mis au point une stratégie de jeu pour contrer notre adversaire et remporter ce match, en prévision du match retour», prévu le 16 ou le 17 mai au Maroc, a expliqué le coach national. Le choix du stade de Koléa (Tipasa) pour le déroulement de cette rencontre s'explique, selon Heddane, par la «bonne qualité » de la pelouse du stade. «Koléa dispose aujourd'hui de la meilleure pelouse d'Algérie», a-t-il dit, précisant que «le premier paramètre c'est la pelouse, car elle va permettre à nos joueurs, qui sont techniques, d'évoluer dans les meilleures conditions».

Le coach algérien a également lancé un appel aux supporters pour venir nombreux soutenir l'équipe algérienne, au sein de laquelle évoluent des joueurs qui s'illustrent actuellement en championnat. «On a essayé de prendre les meilleurs joueurs locaux et créer une symbiose et une homogénéité dans l'équipe», a-t-il dit. La motivation est grande chez les coéquipiers de Ammar Amour (USM Alger) selon lequel l'équipe A «renferme une pléiade de jeunes joueurs très motivés, avides de s'illustrer dans cette compétition, et éventuellement d'intégrer dans une prochaine étape l'équipe A pour jouer la prochaine CAN et le Mondial 2010». L'attaquant Nouri Ouznadji, 23 ans, sociétaire du NA Hussein Dey, a accueilli avec enthousiasme sa première sélection.

«On se prépare dans une bonne ambiance. Le groupe est formidable. J'espère que notre équipe ira loin dans cette compétition africaine réservée aux joueurs locaux», a-t-il notamment affirmé, souhaitant que sa sélection en équipe A soit «un premier pas vers l'équipe A» avec laquelle il ambitionne de réaliser «une bonne carrière». Le staff technique national, dirigé par le duo Mustapha Heddane et Djelloul Zoheir, a fait appel à vingt-deux joueurs pour le regroupement, qui se poursuivra jusqu'au 3 mai. Aujourd’hui, les hommes de Mustapha Heddane disputeront un match amical à Koléa face à la formation locale (ESMK), une équipe de l'interrégions centre qui a été éliminée vendredi en demi-finales de la Coupe d'Algérie par le WA Tlemcen.
