Tunis, May 22, 2009 -- Tunisian football club, Esperance, Thursday won the Arab Champions League, and the accompanying US$ 1 million prize money, after drawing 1-1 with Widad Casablanca of Morocco in the second-leg final played at the Rades stadium, near Tunis, before 50,000 fans.
The Tunisians had earlier won the first leg 1-0 in Casablanca, Morocco, for a total 2-1 aggregate win.
Thursday's goals - both from penalties - were scored by Moroccan Rafik Abdessamad in the 66th minute and Oussama Darragi in the 87th minute for the hosts.
Esperance, celebrating their 90th anniversary, made it a historic treble, also winning the North African Football Union Cup and the Tunisian championship with a 4-1 thrashing of Etoil Sahel.
This was the first Arab cup for the Tunisians in the new version of the competition, and the second in the club's history after their 1993 triumph against Bahrain's Al Muharraq (3-0 in Tunis).
Esperance also won the Arab Supercup in 1996.
For Widad Casablanca, this was their second consecutive final (loss) of the Arab Champions League, after falling to ES Sétif of Algeria last year.
