PARIS, August 17, 2008: Newly promoted Grenoble beat Rennes 1-0 Sunday with a goal from Nassim Akrour to top the standings in the French league after two rounds.

Defending champion Lyon was held to a scoreless draw at Lorient while title hopeful Marseille routed Auxerre 4-0 in Sunday's other matches.

Algeria forward Akrour scored for Grenoble with a 30-meter strike into the top corner off a backheel pass from Daniel Moreira in the 21st minute.

"We played some nice football in the first half," Grenoble coach Mecha Bazdarevic told Canal Plus television. "We struggled a bit in the second half but we managed to keep our lead."

Rennes goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez saved a penalty kick from midfielder Sofiane Feghouli in the ninth after Moreira was fouled inside the area.

Grenoble is the only team to have six points after two rounds. Marseille moved into second place with four points, tied with Lyon, Monaco and Lorient.

Mamadou Niang gave Marseille the lead by heading in a cross from Ivory Coast forward Bakari Kone in the 17th minute, before an own-goal from defender Stephane Grichting made it 2-0 in the 63rd when he deflected in a low shot from Hatem Ben Arfa.

Substitute Elliot Grandin made it 3-0 in the 76th, and Dutch midfielder Boudewijn Zenden sealed the win with a free kick into the top right corner in the 86th.

Lyon was denied a victory by Lorient goalkeeper Fabien Audard.

Audard tipped a close-range shot from Karim Benzema over the crossbar in the 31st. A free kick from Lyon playmaker Juninho then hit the bar in the 48th before Audard stopped an overhead kick from Benzema.

"We were solid defensively but the most important (thing) is to win games," Lyon manager Claude Puel said. "We had a lot of chances this afternoon."

Lorient's only scoring chance came in the 44th when midfielder Ulrich Le Pen pulled his shot over an empty goal.

On Saturday, it was: Paris Saint-Germain 1, Bordeaux 0; Nantes 1, Monaco 1; Caen 3, Valenciennes 1; Lille 1, Le Mans 3; Nice 2, Nancy 1; Saint-Etienne 2, Sochaux 1; and Toulouse 2, Le Havre 1.

Les Verts dans les championnats européens de football :
Ziani et Akrour se distinguent

Lundi 18 Août 2008 -- Dans le championnat de France, Karim Ziani et Nassim Akrour ont bien entamé leur saison. Le marseillais Ziani a effectué, hier à l'occasion de la deuxième journée de Ligue1, une très belle prestation. Aligné d'entrée face à Auxerre (match remporté par l'OM par 4 à 0), le meneur de jeu des Verts s'est distingué par ses percées et ses centres millimétrés. Même s'il a pêché par un certain individualisme en début rencontre, il s'est vite ressaisi en mettant son talent au service de ses coéquipiers. Il a été à l'origine de plusieurs actions dangereuses, notamment le deuxième but de son équipe (63') inscrit contre son camp par Stéphane Grichting. Ziani a cédé sa place à Grandin à un quart d'heure de la fin de la rencontre. Son coéquipier Salim Arrache n'a pas encore joué. Ce dernier serait en train de négocier son transfert vers un club en Russie.

L'autre algérien qui s'est distingué lors de cette deuxième journée est bien évidemment Nassim Akrour, qui évolue avec Grenoble. Hier, il a inscrit son second but face à Rennes (21’). Akrour a marqué l’unique but du match d'un tir puissant des 25 mètres. La semaine dernière, ce même joueur avait inscrit le premier but de son équipe (87') face à Sochaux sur le terrain de ce dernier. Le match avait été remporté par Grenoble sur le score de deux buts à un. Grâce à ces deux succès, Grenoble prend la tête du classement avec six points.

Les autres joueurs ont entamé timidement ce début de championnat français. Bezzaz n'était même pas sur la liste des 18 dans le match qui a opposé samedi son équipe Valenciennes à Caen (perdu 3 à 1). Du côté de Lorient, Mansouri, qui avait joué toute la rencontre face au Mans (match gagné par Lorient à l'extérieur 1 à 0) pour le compte de la première journée, n’a fait son entrée face à Lyon (0 – 0) qu'à la 86e minute.

En Ligue 2, Nadir Belhadj n'a pas encore fait d'apparition avec Lens (à la troisième journée). La chose s'explique par le fait que le défenseur des Verts veut à tout prix changer d'air. Selon les dernières informations, il se dirigerait vers le club anglais Portsmouth. L’autre défenseur de l'équipe nationale, Mehdi Meniri, ainsi que l'international Fethi Harek (sélectionné lors du stage de juin dernier même s'il n'a pas pris part à aucun des quatre matchs des Verts), ont joué toute la partie avec leur club Bastia face à Strasbourg (perdu un but à zéro). Cherrad qui avait inscrit un but lors de la première journée n'a pas quant à lui fait d'apparition sur le terrain.

En Allemagne, les deux clubs dans lesquels évoluent les internationaux algériens, Antar Yahia et Matmour, en l'occurrence Bochum et Borussia M'Gladbach, ont tous les deux perdu leurs matchs ce week-end. Toutefois, nos deux joueurs ont pris part à toute la partie. C'était la première journée du championnat allemand.

Les Verts dans les championnats européens de football :
Ziani toujours titulaire, Saïfi effectue son retour et Meniri expulsé

Lundi 25 Août 2008 -- C'est la seconde fois que l'international algérien Karim Ziani fait son entrée avec l'Olympique de Marseille (OM), en tant que titulaire lors de la troisième journée du championnat de France de football. L'équipe marseillaise a affronté le Havre sur les bases de cette dernière. L'OM a eu le dernier mot (0 – 1) et s’empare de la tête du classement en compagnie de Lyon, vainqueur de Grenoble (2 – 0). Une nouvelle fois, Ziani a fait une très bonne partie avant d'être remplacé par Benarfa à la 55e minute. Il a été à l’origine de plusieurs actions dangereuses.

Un autre Vert, Nassim Akrour (Grenoble) n'a pas pu enchainer avec un troisième but. Il avait inscrit deux buts durant les deux précédentes journées. D'ailleurs son club s'est incliné par un doublé face à Lyon. Akrour, qui ne s’est pas montré efficace, a du céder sa place à Dja Djedje à une demi-heure de la fin de la rencontre (61').

Cette troisième journée a été marquée également par le retour de Rafik Saïfi qui a pris part à toute la rencontre Valenciennes - Lorient. Mais son club (Lorient) a perdu sur le score de 3 buts à 1. La prestation de Saïfi été a tout juste moyenne. Chose tout a fait normal puisqu'il revient d'une blessure. Mansouri par contre n'a pas pris part à cette rencontre.

En Ligue 2, Mahdi Meniri, avec Bastia, s'est fait expulsé à la 59e minute pour cumul de cartons dans le match qui a opposé son club à Guingamp et que Bastia a remporté (2 – 1). Et, pour la seconde fois consécutive, son coéquipier Fethi Harek, convoqué en équipe nationale lors du stage du mois de juin, a joué en tant que titulaire.

En Ecosse, Brahim Hamdani (Glasgow Rangers) n'est toujours pas revenu de sa blessure. Mais son coéquipier, Madjid Bouguerra, a encore été aligné en tant que titulaire, à l’occasion de la troisième journée du championnat écossais. Rangers a imposé le nul (1 – 1) face à Aberdeen chez ce dernier.

Enfin, en Allemagne, Antar Yahia (Bochum), comme son habitude, était aligné d'entré et a disputé toute la partie. Malheureusement pour lui, son club, qui a évolué à domicile, a été forcé de partager les points du match avec Wolfsburg (2 – 2).

Ziani and Kone score as Marseille edges Sochaux 2-1

PARIS, August 30, 2008 — Marseille beat Sochaux 2-1 Saturday with goals from Karim Ziani and Bakari Kone to consolidate its spot atop the French league.

Algeria playmaker Ziani scored with an angled shot that Sochaux goalkeeper Teddy Richert could only deflect in the 40th minute and Ivory Coast forward Kone shot past Richert in the 60th off a pass from Mamadou Niang.

Turkey forward Mevlut Erding pulled one goal back for Sochaux in the 73rd, outpacing the Marseille defence to slip the ball past France goalkeeper Steve Mandanda.

"We had the game under control," Marseille coach Eric Gerets told Canal Plus television, "but at 2-0 we started to complicate things. Again, it was our goalkeeper who saved us."

Mandanda blocked with his feet a close-range shot from Erding in the 84th before stopping a header from the Turkey striker in stoppage time.

Marseille has 10 points from four matches.

Defending champion Lyon can tie Marseille in first place if it wins in Saint-Etienne on Sunday. In other games, Bordeaux plays Lille and Rennes takes on Toulouse.

On Saturday, it was: Nantes 1, Le Mans 4; Caen 0, Paris Saint-Germain 1; Grenoble 1, Monaco 0; Lorient 0, Auxerre 2; Nancy 2, Le Havre 1; Nice 2, Valenciennes 0.

In Nantes, Norway forward Thorstein Helstad collected a through ball from Fredrik Stromstad to equalize for Le Mans in the 22nd minute after Senegal midfielder Guirane Ndaw had put Nantes ahead with a header in the 20th.

Mali international Modibo Maiga gave Le Mans the lead with a powerful shot from 20 metres in the 45th.

Le Mans sealed the win with two late goals.

Mathieu Coutadeur made it 3-1 in the 83rd, shooting past Nantes goalkeeper Tony Heurtebis after Ivory Coast forward Gervinho had broken through on the right flank. Gervinho added the fourth goal on a counterattack in stoppage time.

Le Mans is second in the league with nine points.

In Nice, Habib Bamogo opened the scoring for the home side with a diagonal shot in the 53rd, before forward Loic Remy cut inside to add the second with a low curling shot in the 86th.

Valenciennes midfielder Siaka Tiene was sent off in the 32nd for blocking a shot with his hand over the goal line. Remy sent the ensuing penalty kick over the crossbar.

Nice has nine points and is tied with Le Mans and Grenoble.

In Grenoble, Daniel Moreira volleyed home in the 18th with an assist from Nassim Akrour as Monaco suffered its first loss this season.

In Lorient, Poland forward Ireneusz Jelen beat goalkeeper Fabien Audard from close range in the 33rd, and Benoit Pedretti doubled the lead for Auxerre with a long-range strike in the 74th.

Brazilian defender Andre Luiz scored the winner for Nancy with a header in the 88th. Cedric Faure had put Le Havre ahead with a 25-metre drive into the top corner in the 23rd, before Jonathan Brison equalized with a half-volley in the 72nd.

In Caen, PSG forward Guillaume Hoarau diverted in a cross from winger Jerome Rothen in the fifth minute.

Portsmouth signs Algeria defender Belhadj on loan

PORTSMOUTH, England, September 1, 2008: Portsmouth signed Algeria defender Nadir Belhadj on loan from Lens for the rest of the season on Monday.

The 26-year-old left back, who will wear No. 39 for Pompey, could join permanently at the end of the season if he impresses manager Harry Redknapp.

Belhadj will probably compete for a place in the team with Armand Traore, who is on a yearlong loan from Arsenal.

The 18-year-old Traore started the 1-0 loss to Manchester United on August 25 but sat out Saturday's 3-0 win at Everton, which was Pompey's first victory this season.

"The club have chased me for a while now and when I heard that they wanted me, there was only one place I wanted to come," Belhadj said. "I like the system that the side played against Everton at the weekend. It suits me because I have a lot of pace and I like to run a lot."

Belhadj has also played for Gueugnon and Sedan, with whom he won promotion to the top flight of French football and reached the French Cup final.

Algerian international Djebbour signs with Greek club AEK

September 1, 2008 -- Algerian international striker Rafik Djebbour signed a three-year contract with Athens-based football club AEK, the sporting press reported on Sunday (August 31st). Djebbour played in in France for Auxerre and La Louvière before moving to Greece, where he played for Ethnikos Asteras, Atromitos and Panionios.

Djebbour opte pour l’AEK

Lundi 1 Septembre 2008 -- L’attaquant international algérien Rafik Djebbour a signé samedi un contrat de trois ans au profit du club hellénique de l’AEK Athènes. Formé à l’AJ Auxerre (France), Djabbour évoluait depuis deux saisons au sein d’un autre club grec, Panionios, où il était le buteur(14 buts en 2007- 2008). Avant d’opter pour le prestigieux club de la capitale grecque, Djebbour était sollicité par de nombreux clubs européens et même au Golfe où il était annoncé du côté d’El Wihda Saoudi.
