Le Football et l’Afrique, un livre historique

Lundi 8 décembre 2008 -- La FIFA et les Éditions E/P/A ont présenté le livre Le Football et l'Afrique ce lundi 8 décembre à l'occasion d'une conférence de presse au Musée Dapper à Paris (France) en présence des auteurs - Paul Dietschy et David-Claude Kemo-Keimbou - et de l'ex-joueur international ghanéen Abedi Pelé.

Le Football et l'Afrique est un ouvrage unique sur la mémoire du football en Afrique. Il est né de la volonté de réunir les archives du football africain, jusque-là dispersées, dans un même recueil. Les auteurs Paul Dietschy, historien renommé, également co-auteur de FIFA 1904 - 2004, et David-Claude Kemo-Keimbou, spécialiste du sport et de la sociologie africaine, offrent une analyse nouvelle sur la capacité du football à représenter un jeu, mais bien plus encore, un moyen de mobilisation nationale et d'affirmation internationale de l'Afrique.

Le Football et l'Afrique raconte les exploits des footballeurs africains comme une des images les plus positives que le continent propose à l'heure de la mondialisation, sans pour autant occulter le football de l'ère coloniale. C'est l'histoire du football comme instrument de combat pour l'indépendance, comme en témoigne l'exemple de l'équipe du FLN (Front de libération nationale) pendant la guerre d'Algérie. Celle d'un football au cœur des luttes politiques pour un grand nombre d'États issus de la décolonisation. C'est le récit du football comme enjeu du combat contre l'apartheid récompensé par l'attribution à l'Afrique du Sud de l'organisation de la Coupe du Monde de la FIFA 2010.

En s'associant à la réalisation de cet ouvrage qui retrace l'histoire du football traversant l'espace politique, social et culturel de l'Afrique, la FIFA souligne sa volonté de « Gagner en Afrique avec l'Afrique », et de contribuer à la mémoire du football africain à un an et demi de la Coupe du Monde de la FIFA, Afrique du Sud 2010.

L'ouvrage est actuellement disponible en français. La version anglaise sera publiée au début de l'année 2009.

Le Football et l'Afrique - a historical book

December 8, 2008 -- FIFA and the Editions E/P/A publishing house unveiled the book Le Football et l'Afrique today, Monday 8 December, at a press conference at the Dapper museum in Paris, France, attended by the authors, Paul Dietschy and David-Claude Kemo-Keimbou, and the former Ghana international Abedi Pele.

Le Football et l'Afrique is a unique work on the history of football in Africa. The idea behind the book was to compile a history of African football, collating all of the football archives scattered across the continent in a single volume. The authors - Paul Dietschy, a renowned historian, who is also the co-author of FIFA 1904-2004, and David-Claude Kemo-Keimbou, an expert on African sport and sociology - provide a fresh analysis of football not only as a game, but more importantly, as an instrument for developing national identity and a way for Africa to assert itself internationally.

Le Football et l'Afrique recalls the exploits of African footballers, which certainly represent one of the most positive images of the continent in this age of globalisation, but also gives an account of football in the colonial period. So, for example, the authors describe how football was used as an instrument in various independence struggles, as illustrated by the FLN (Front de Libération Nationale) team during the Algerian war. Football was also at the core of the political battles of many countries emerging from decolonisation. This book also tells the story of football as a tool in the campaign to end apartheid, which was rewarded by South Africa being chosen as the host of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.

FIFA's involvement in the publication of this book, which retraces football's place in the political, social and cultural history of Africa, highlights its commitment to the Win in Africa with Africa initiative and, with the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa only a year and a half away, also makes a contribution to the annals of African footballing history.

The book is currently available in French, and the English version will be published in early 2009.
