May 24, 2009 -- CR Belouizdad won the 2009 Algeria Cup on Thursday (May 21st), beating CA Bordj Bou Arreridj 2-1 in a penalty shoot-out at Mustapha Tchaker stadium in Blida. This was the sixth Cup title for CRB, following victories in 1966, 1969, 1970, 1978 and 1995.
The final ended in a penalty shoot-out after both teams failed to score during the first ninety minutes and extra time. The 22 players performed well at times and not so well at others, under the watchful eyes of a capacity crowd including President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
With the blistering heat – reaching 40 degrees in the shade – making things difficult for the players, the pace fluctuated throughout the match. CABBA appeared hungrier for the trophy, showing more enterprising play and creating more scoring opportunities, but were thwarted each time by CRB goalkeeper Ahmed Fellah, who many fans thought should have been man of the match.
Bordj Bou Arreridj, who were well-organised in midfield, missed an opportunity to wrap up the match in the 85th minute when right-back Abderrahmane Hachoud sent the ball into the stands over an undefended goal.
CABBA fans had streamed into the city of Blida en masse, decking the streets with their team's colours. Hopeful that their team could rise above their poor performance in the league this season and win a club-first Cup title, the fans were crestfallen at the final result, even though they knew a penalty shoot-out is often a matter of luck.
Players and club management reassured their fans with comments about the ups and downs of the game.
"That's football," said CABBA manager Abdelkader Yaich. "We dominated most of the match and created several scoring opportunities, but unfortunately did not succeed in taking advantage of them."
Calling football "cruel and unfair", Yaich said his team "honestly didn't deserve to lose".
The coach then thanked his players and congratulated CRB on their victory.
CABBA captain Merouane Kial said that luck deserted his team on the day of the final.
"We suffered a cruel defeat in the final, despite dominating our opponents for most of the time," he said.
Trying to overcome his disappointment, Kial looked to the future and spoke of the valuable experience that the club has accumulated. "Despite this bitter defeat, we're proud of putting together a team which will be a force to be reckoned with over the next few years."
Things were much happier in the opposing camp, where CRB staff celebrated their sixth trophy and an enviable record despite a season full of highs and lows.
CRB chairman Mahfoud Kerbadj expressed his delight over the win. "I'm thrilled that we won the title, even though we didn't play a great game," he told journalists. "My players managed to keep their heads. When the match went to penalties, I was sure that Fellah would rise to the occasion, just as he did in the previous rounds against MC Alger and WA Tlemcen."
"We proved that CRB is still a strong team and one that people should look out for in the future," he added. "I really must take my hat off to the players."
Team coach Mohamed Henkouche saluted his opponents. "We were up against a tough side who deserved much more," he said. "We managed to keep our heads... thanks must go to our goalkeeper, who rose to the challenge."
Fellah spoke about his role in the victory. "I kept my cool. I'm very proud to have contributed to my team's victory, which I hope will open up new horizons for me," he commented.
