    Petanque in Algeria


    March 27, 2009 -- Algeria and Tunisia will participate in the 2009 Women's World Petanque Championships, beginning Saturday (March 28th) in Bevagna, Italy. Algeria has been among the top qualifiers for the event in recent years.

    April 7, 2009 -- Algeria, Germany France, Switzerland, Italy and host Tunisia will participate in the 7th International Petanque Tournament on the Tunisian island of Djerba beginning April 23rd, La Presse reported. Petanque, which is already an Olympic sport, will be included in the 2009 Mediterranean Games in Pescara.

    May 3, 2009 -- The third Stade Marocain International Petanque Tournament kicked off on Saturday (May 2nd) in Rabat. The tournament includes top teams from Belgium, the Netherlands, Algeria, Mauritania and other Arab and European countries.

    November 11, 2009 -- Tunis will host the second African Nations Petanque Championship from November 19th-22nd, TAP reported on Tuesday (November 10th). Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Libya, Mauritius, Madagascar, Djibouti, Seychelles, Senegal, Guinea, Mali, Benin, Ivory Coast, Cameroon and the host nation will vie for a slot at the 2010 World Championship in Taiwan.

    November 23, 2009 -- Madagascar defeated hosts Tunisia to win the 2nd African Nations Petanque Championship on Sunday (November 22nd) at El Menzah. Tunisia beat Senegal and Madagascar overcame Algeria to reach the final. Following their performance in the African tournament, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco qualified for the 2010 World Championship in Taiwan.

    March 24, 2010 -- Tunis will open the 17th International Petanque Tournament next Wednesday (March 31st), TAP reported. Athletes from France, Spain, Belgium, Russia, Monaco, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Libya, Qatar and Tunisia will take part in the 4-day event.

    May 4, 2010 -- Stade Marocain won the 4th Rabat International Petanque Tournament last week-end, MAP reported on Monday (May 3rd). National teams and clubs from Algeria, Mauritania, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain and Senegal participated in the event.
