July 6, 2009 -- The 16th Mediterranean Games ended Sunday (July 5th) in Pescara with host nation Italy finishing in first place with 176 medals. Tunisia performed best among Maghreb nations, finishing 6th with 37 medals (13 gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze). Morocco ended in 10th place with 21 medals, including 6 gold, 9 silver and six bronze, Algeria finished 14th in the general standings with 17 medals ( 2 gold, 3 silver and 12 bronze) and Libya was 18th with one gold and 6 bronze medals. 4,180 athletes from 23 countries competed for 11 days in 30 disciplines.
