Subject : ALGERIA – A championship with new rules
The 2009/2010 Championship in Algeria has been launched with new reforms. The 47th championship was effectively declared starting on Thursday August 6th. The Algerian Football Federation has set May 15, 2010 as the date for the end of the championship in order to enable the national team to better prepare for the World Cup in South Africa in case they do qualify for the event. The federation also took into account the holding of the African Cup of Nations in Angola as the country is expected to be part of the participating teams. Other major changes were affected in the way the championship is run:
The Championship may now be played on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays as these days are officially the new weekends starting August 14( With Friday and Saturday and not Thursday and Friday). Even though most of the matches shall be held on Saturdays some will be played on Thursday and Friday nights. Delayed matches will be played on Tuesdays.
Matches to be played in the night shall kickoff at 7pm and shall be preceded by matches of the Junior championship just like during the 1977 and 1979 football seasons. The programming of Junior games in prelude to senior matches is a « fundamental decision for the development of football »said Mohamed Mecherara, president of the professional league.
