Western Sahara to welcome athletes from 30 nations

February 5, 2010 -- More than 400 foreign athletes from 30 countries will take part in the 10th Western Sahara Marathon on February 22nd, APS reported on Thursday (February 4th). As part of the 2010 programme, a children's marathon will be held in Dakhla on February 25th. Participants will arrive in the camps on February 19th, Sahrawi press reported.

Exmouth woman marks 40th birthday with charity challenge

February 6, 2010 -- An Exmouth runner is preparing to mark her 40th birthday by taking on a gruelling challenge of a desert marathon. Amanda Seymour, of Bicton Street, is gearing up for a challenge-of-a-lifetime, running in extreme heat in the Sahara Desert. Card designer Amanda is hoping in February to raise much-needed funds for the Saharawi refugees. While she is in the desert she will also experience the plight of the Saharawi people living in the Algerian refugee camps, as all marathon competitors live with the community - the last colony in Africa - during the event. Amanda, who has never run a marathon before, said: "I turn 40 two days before I fly out. I want to mark it with something significant, challenging and worthwhile. "I know I am going to be facing a big challenge. What I really want to achieve is for as many people as possible to learn about the situation in the Western Sahara. While we are there we will live with the refugee families, so not only will we run for them, we will also raise awareness of their struggles." The aim of the Sahara marathon is to show international solidarity with the Saharawi people. To prepare for the gruelling 26-mile run in 30-degree heat, Amanda has been pounding along the sand on Exmouth beach. She hopes to raise £1,000 for her efforts - which will be used by UK charity Sandblast to reach its goal of £50,000 to support artists in the refugee camps.

1,000 athletes to take part in 10th Western Sahara Marathon

ALGIERS, February 16, 2010 (ANSAmed) -- Roughly 1,000 athletes, including over 400 foreigners from 30 countries from all over the world, will participate in the 10th edition of the Marathon of Western Sahara, to be held February 22 in the Saharawi refugee camps in the south of Algeria. The event is organised each year on the occasion of the anniversary of the creation of the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). A press release from the organisers informs that the marathon will be held among the refugee camps near Tindouf (800 km south of Algiers), El Ayoun, Ousserd and Smara, with stages of 42, 20, 10 and 5 kilometres. The earnings from the race will go to projects for the youth of these camps, which since 1975 have welcomed roughly 150,000 refugees from the ex-Spanish colony, occupied in that year by Morocco.

Mercredi 17 Février 2010 -- Le comité d’organisation du marathon du Sahara occidental a indiqué que la 10e édition de cette manifestation sportive débutera le 22 février dans les camps de réfugiés sahraouis. Le marathon verra la participation de 1 000 athlètes représentant trente pays aux côtés d’athlètes sahraouis, indique un communiqué du comité d’organisation. La course, qui se déroulera sur plusieurs étapes entre les wilayas d’El-Ayoun, Ousserd et Smara, se fera sur des distances de 42, 20, 10 et 5 km outre une course pour enfants. Le marathon du Sahara a été organisé pour la première fois en 2001 sous l’égide du secrétariat d’Etat sahraoui en charge de la jeunesse et des sports en collaboration avec des instances sahraouies dans le but de sensibiliser l’opinion internationale à la cause sahraouie. Il s’agit d’associations italiennes et espagnoles, outre des personnalités françaises, allemandes, norvégiennes et britanniques. Les recettes de cette manifestation sont destinées chaque année à un projet au profit des jeunes dans les camps des réfugiés sahraouis. Elles seront destinées cette année au parachèvement de la réalisation du centre de loisirs pour jeunes au niveau de la wilaya de Dakhla et à l’achat d’équipements sportifs destinés aux écoles et de médicaments pour les hôpitaux. La 10e édition de ce marathon, qui verra la participation de plus de 420 athlètes représentant vingt-six pays de tous les continents aux côtés d’environ 500 athlètes sahraouis, sera sanctionnée par une remise de prix aux lauréats le 23 février en marge du 34e anniversaire de la proclamation de la République arabe sahraouie démocratique. Dans un souci de promouvoir le sport sahraoui, le secrétariat d’Etat sahraoui à la jeunesse et aux sports a décidé d’attribuer aux lauréats sahraouis des prix de différentes valeurs. Des prix exclusifs seront remis aux filles (marathon 5 km). Selon le communiqué de la commission organisatrice, cette manifestation vise à sensibiliser l’opinion publique à la question sahraouie et à préparer une équipe sahraouie qui participera aux jeux Olympiques. Proposée en 2001 par l’Américain Jeb Carney en collaboration avec U.S. Western Sahara Fondation, cette manifestation a bénéficié du soutien des autorités sahraouies et de tous les sympathisants de la cause sahraouie à l’échelle internationale.

Western Sahara Marathon begins in Laayoune

February 22, 2010 -- More than 400 runners from 28 countries will join 450 Sahrawi athletes on Monday (February 22nd) for the 10th edition of the Western Sahara Marathon, Sahrawi press agency SPS reported. Along with the main 42k and 21k events in Smara and Laayoune, 10k and 5k races are scheduled for Monday afternoon and a children's marathon will be held February 25th in Dakhla. According to APS, Real Madrid football player Ivan Helguera is among the sports and media personalities who arrived in the camps last Friday to attend the festivities.

Salvado takes third Sahara victory

February 22, 2010 -- Spaniard Jon Salvado has won the 10th Sahara Marathon for the third time. The 43-year-old from Bilbao crossed the finish line at Smara Refugee Camp in Algeria in a time of two hours 42 minutes and 40 seconds. Salvado finished ahead of 800 entries from 28 countries who braved conditions at the extraordinary event which takes place through the deserts of western Algeria, between three refugee camps. The camps house around 200,000 Saharawi people, exiled from their Western Sahara homeland since 1975. "I had stopped training for the event, but my local town hall decided to send me 10 days ago," said Salvado. "I paced one of my colleagues Teresa Pulido in the Amsterdam Marathon last October and surprised myself by running 2:32, so I decided to run the full marathon here this time." He added: "It was very hot at the start and there were some good Algerians in there, and they went off really fast. But, having run the 'half' before, which is the second half of the marathon course, I knew it was more difficult, so I saved myself, and it paid off.". He continued: "There are many Basques (competing) here - around 85 of us. We really understand the suffering that the Saharawi people are going through. Yes, the competition is important but it's also important to tell the problems that the people here are having. The two things go together."

10e édition du marathon du Sahara
Une réussite totale

Mardi 23 Février 2010 -- La 10e édition du marathon du Sahara a eu lieu hier dans les camps de réfugiés sahraouis de Tindouf. Cette manifestation, beaucoup plus politique que sportive, a été, à n’en pas douter, une grande réussite puisque le comité d’organisation indique que 824 athlètes qui y ont participé. Le Sahara marathon prend de plus en plus d’importance tant sa dimension internationale a été une fois encore révélée au vu de la diversité des origines des athlètes puisque 420 viennent de 28 pays à travers les cinq continents. Une large couverture médiatique, cinquante-quatre organes de presse et de télévision, a caractérisé cette manifestation de solidarité avec le peuple sahraoui. En cette circonstance, le président de la RASD, secrétaire général du Front Polisario, Mohamed Abdelaziz, a indiqué dans une courte intervention au début du marathon que cet événement sportif entre dans le cadre du dialogue, de la coexistence, de la paix et de la solidarité pour concrétiser les idéaux de liberté et de justice, et ce, a-t-il poursuivi, afin de faire «triompher le droit et concrétiser l’avènement d’un Etat sahraoui conformément au droit international».
