March 21, 2010 -- The 8th festival of Vovinam – a traditional Vietnamese martial art – was held in Algiers capital on March 19-20, attracting 350 athletes from 30 cities and provinces across Algeria to compete in 25 events. At the awards ceremony, Vietnamese ambassador to Algeria Do Trong Cuong praised Algeria for its impressive achievements at regional and international Vovinam tournaments, and confirmed that Vietnam will increase cooperation and the exchange of its Vovinam athletes with Algeria. Algeria won the trophy at the second world Vovinam festival held in Algiers in April 2006. At the second Africa Vovinam tournament in Senegal in November 2009, it finished first with 9 golds, 10 silvers and 12 bronzes. Zaghbib Yazid, president of the Algerian Martial Art Federation, thanked Vietnam for close cooperation and assistance in recent years and said Vovinam has been promoted across the country. Since the first Vovinam club was established in Algeria in 2001, the martial art has now attracted nearly 7,000 athletes, he said.

January 29, 2011 (VOV) -- The 9th Vovinam Championships closed in Algiers City, Algeria on January 28, in the presence of the Vietnamese ambassador to Algeria, Do Trong Cuong, and many high-ranking sports officials. On the occasion, the Algerian martial arts federation delivered an insignia to Ambassador Do Trong Cuong for his contribution to developing Vovinam in Algeria. The tournament this year drew 580 athletes, including 45 women, from 80 clubs representing 22 provinces and cities in Algeria. Athletes competed in 25 events supported by the enthusiasm of hundreds of fans. The first Vovinam club was established in the Hydra district of Algiers City in 2001, then spread to 30 cities and provinces throughout Algeria. Now the country has about 7,000 people aged 14-52 taking part in the sport. Many young athletes of Algeria are attracted to Vovinam because of the flexibility and strength in both movement and spirit. In the World Vovinam Championships held in Germany last year, the Algerian national team won 22 medals, earning second place behind the French team.

January 30, 2011 -- The ninth National Vovinam Championships in Algeria closed on January 28 in the Algiers capital in the presence of Vietnamese Ambassador Do Trong Cuong and Algerian sport officials. This year’s event drew 580 athletes from 80 clubs of 22 provinces of the North African country. The first club of Vovinam was established in 2001 in the capital’s Hydra district. At present, about 7,000 people in the age package of 14-52 are practising this sport. Zarouki Mohamed, a 25-year-old athlete from Dar El Beida, who won men’s singles champion this year said Vovinam helped him to better understand Vietnamese sporting spirit and courage. Last year, at the World Vovinam Championship held Germany , the Algerian team of Angieri secured 22 medals including 8 golds, 7 silvers and 7 bronze medals. On this occasion, the Algeria Martial Arts League presented insignia to Ambassador Do Trong Cuong for his contributions to promoting Vovinam sport in Algeria.
