Indianapolis (USA) - Algerian swimming star Salim Iles snatched, Monday in Indianapolis, the 100m freestyle silver medal at the World Short Course Championships.
Iles clocked a time of 48”07, 10 hundreds of a second behind American Jason Lezak (47”97). Bronze medal went to Canadian Rick Say (48.30).
In Moscow’s world short championships in 2002, Salim Iles earned a bronze in the 100m free, while in the recent Arab sports games, hosted by Algeria from 24 September to 8 October, he snatched four gold.
On Saturday, the top Algerian swimmer only managed 5th place in the 50m free in a time of 21”71, that’s 14 hundreds of a second behind the winner, Britain’s Mark Foster (21”58).
Eight Algerian swimmers contested Indianapolis world championships. The 4x200m free relay team (men) also managed to qualify for the final. Mahrez Mebarek, Sofiane Daid, Aghiles Slimani and Nabil Kebbab finishing in a “promising” 8th place clocking 7’23”30. Top three spots went to the USA (7’03”71), Australia (7’03”78) and Brazil (7’06”64). (62377)
