June 7, 2010 -- For the first time in history, the Algerian national women's football squad is headed for the 7th African Women's Championship (AWC) finals. Algeria beat hosts Tunisia by a single goal on Saturday (June 5th) to advance 2-1 on aggregate and head for the finals, which will be played in South Africa in October. The match at El Menzah Stadium in Tunis was the second leg of the final round of qualifiers. Algeria secured a draw while hosting the first leg, but did not capitalise on scoring opportunities. "The win came after intensive preparations," Algeria manager Azeddinne Chih told Magharebia after the match. "The players put in distinguished performances and showed determination... against the Tunisians, who are considered one of the biggest African teams". "We had a historic chance to qualify," Tunisia captain Soumia Werghi told Magharebia. "We played good matches, especially in the first leg round. But we failed to capitalise on this chance, perhaps because of a lack of experience." "In any case, we have to accept defeat and try to fix our mistakes in the next qualifiers," she added.

Algeria struck a balance between risky attacks and pressuring their rivals through Naima Bouhani, Sabrina Moussawi and Asma Wadah. The vigilance of the Algerian defensive line and goalkeeper Najat Fadoul kept the net goal-free. In the first half, Algeria out-played Tunisia by controlling the midfield. However, they failed to convert opportunities into goals, such as in the 25th minute, when Bouhani's shot hit the bar. Meanwhile, Tunisia's counter-attacks did not pose any danger, except for a shot by Mahrzia Zwawi in the 27th minute that was cleared by the Algerian defence. In the second half, the Tunisians tried to impose their own pace and pressure their foes, who pulled back to their zone for defence. The Tunisians had many scoring opportunities through Imen Tarouchi and Zina Hidouri, but the final touch was missing. Several Guineans refereed the June 5th match, including Tirez Sanio and linewomen Dousso Sako and Aminata Konati. The fourth referee was Tunisia's Lilia Abd Jawad.

Algeria's assistant manager, Sofiane Abou Jilla, said the female Fennecs would do their best to represent the Maghreb and Arab football in the best possible way in the finals. "We did what the manager asked us to do," Algeria's Leila Matoug said after the victory. "We tried to avoid the mistakes of the first-leg match. We have achieved what's important, but the more important thing is still to be shown in South Africa." "We hope to receive the necessary support from the fans and officials," she added. For his part, Tunisia manager Mohammed Ali Hammami said he was sad about the loss, and confirmed that his team had been seeking a draw. He also said the players did not put in the required level of performance and lacked concentration and final touch. Algeria were ranked 72nd in FIFA's rankings for May. At the African level, they are ranked 6th behind Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Equatorial Guinea and Morocco. Meanwhile, Tunisia hold 74th place in FIFA's rankings.

The match was played with the stands empty of fans. Souhir Laabidi, a journalist with Hannibal TV, said the fans were missing because women's football still "doesn't attract the attention of Tunisian fans". Laabidi attributed the lack of attention to factors such as female footballers' record of rarely bringing home trophies and their limited participation at regional and international levels. Algeria won the first Arab Women's Cup in 2006, defeating hosts Egypt 4-2 in the final. In 2004 and 2006, Algeria qualified for the AWC. Women are taking an increasing interest in football in Algeria, particularly in light of the Fennecs' upcoming World Cup matches.
