Algerian potential to be highlighted at tourism exhibition in Tunis

Lundi 7 mai 2007 -- L’Algérie participera au Marché international méditerranéen (MIT) prévu du 10 au 12 mai courant à Tunis (Tunisie), a annoncé hier l’Office national du tourisme (ONT) dans un communiqué. La participation de l’Algérie à ce salon s’inscrit dans la perspective de «consolider la place de la destination Algérie au niveau régional et international», et «constitue un espace privilégié au service des opérateurs touristiques nationaux pour réaliser leurs actions promotionnelles et développer davantage les liens de travail avec leurs homologues tunisiens et étrangers», a expliqué l’ONT qui représente le pays à cette manifestation.

Pour l’ONT, cette participation «montre si besoin est la place importante qu’occupe l’action maghrébine de proximité en vue du renforcement des liens de coopération exemplaire en matière d’échanges touristiques entre les deux pays». A cet égard, l’ONT chargé de mettre en œuvre la politique du secteur en matière de promotion touristique conformément à la nouvelle stratégie du développement durable du tourisme à l’horizon 2015, affirme qu’il «déploiera tous les efforts de développement engagés par l’Algérie dans tous les secteurs d’activité économique notamment celui du tourisme». Dans ce contexte, l’ONT affirme que la délégation algérienne participant au MIT «s’attellera à entreprendre les actions promotionnelles et d’information en direction des différents organes d’information dans le but de sensibiliser les partenaires étrangers aux réalisations importantes entreprises par l’Algérie notamment dans le domaine du développement touristique».

Pour l’ONT, «l’attrait important des touristes pour la Tunisie place le marché tunisien comme une destination touristique très prisée au double niveau régional et international». Ainsi, il juge que «la proximité géographique avec ce pays est un atout favorable pour la destination Algérie permettant, d’une part, de faciliter l’établissement de liens avec les opérateurs internationaux intéressés par la destination Afrique du Nord et, d’autre part, de tirer les dividendes des retombées positives générées par l’afflux touristique en provenance de ce pays». Selon la même source, le MIT «est devenu incontestablement un rendez-vous de grande importance pour les intervenants et les professionnels du tourisme au niveau maghrébin et méditerranéen».

May 9, 2007 -- Algeria will take part to 7th Tourism International Fair due to be held in Lisbon, Portugal next May 11th and 12th , announced the Algerian Tourism Minister in a press release issued today, Wednesday.

The Algerian delegation will be headed by Tourism Minister, Mr. Noureddine Moussa.

This summit is placed under the motto "go beyond the barriers and master growth” indicated the same Algerian source.

Participants to this summit will "discuss these measures to be taken to support world tourism growth as well anticipating crises that can be hurdles to its future” added the same press release.

On the sidelines of this show, Mr. Moussa will give a presentation on the tourism development plan in Algeria, said the press release.

Mr. Moussa had announced at the end of last April, that 300 construction projects in the tourism sector were underway in Algeria. The projects' target is to reach a reception capacity of 35,000 beds in hotels, amounting to 640 million euros.

Many of these projects will be achieved in the capital Algiers including a Marriott hotel in Club des pins (394 beds), a Lafider in Birkhadem (512 beds), an Ibis in Bab-Ezzouar (213 beds), and a 5 star two tours (sic) in Bab Ezzouar (410 beds), in addition to the extension of the Algiers Hilton hotel with (322) additional beds.

Algeria has a reception capacity of 85,000 beds in all its hotels situated all over.

May 20, 2007 -- The 9th edition of the international exhibition of tourism and travel (SITEV) opened today May 20th at the Safex exhibition hall of Pins Maritimes on the eastern outskirts of Algiers.

In addition to Algeria, 16 foreign countries will be taking part in this 5-day international event.

The 9th edition of SITEV will be placed under this year under the theme: "Cultural tourism at the service of sustainable development".

SITEV 2007 will witness the active participation of scores of exhibitors, trading delegations and media representatives hailing from various foreign countries.

After several years of a relative backwash, the tourism sector in Algeria is now steadily picking up thanks to a new policy line aimed at rejuvenating this sector and turning it into a driving force behind the national economy.

Multi-faceted tourism is widely seen as a lever of increased wealth and job creation in many countries worldwide.

The investment promotion ministry is seeking expressions of interest by June 11 on running the El-Djazair, a relic of the French colonial era still popularly known under its original name, the St George, and the more contemporary El-Aurassi.

Ownership of the properties would remain in the hands of the Algerian government, which has been undertaking a broad privatisation of the economy of north Africa's biggest country.

May 20, 2007 -- Egypt, Syria and Algeria will host the first round of "Know your Arab Homeland" program for youth Tourism that is organized within the framework of activities of the Arab Ministers of Tourism Council that is beginning its implementation for first time as from this summer.

It is scheduled that first rounds start in Egypt as from 23rd to 29th of June, to be followed in Algeria during the period from 1st to 7th of July, then the program winds up in Syria during the period from 21st to 28th of July.

A number of youths were nominated from several Arab countries including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to take part in this tourism program that aims at familiarizing Arab youth with tourism sites in other Arab countries.

The Arab Ministers of Tourism Council called in its recent session for the Arab countries to nominate youth who are going to make use of these tours and urged the countries that are ready to host the Youth Tourists tours in summer 2008 to notify the Technical Secretariat of the council for declaring about such tours.

Algeria seeks international operators to run top hotels under 30-year contracts

ALGIERS, May 21, 2007 - Algeria is looking for international hotel operators to run the two best-known hotels in the capital Algiers under renewable 30-year contracts, the government said.

Those interested in running the El-Djazair, a relic of the French colonial era still popularly known under its original name, the St George, and the more contemporary El-Aurassi have until June 11 to express interest.

Ownership of the properties would remain in the hands of the Algerian government, which has been undertaking a broad privatisation of the economy of north Africa’s biggest country.

The El-Djazair, with 296 rooms, sits high over Algiers, and boasts a guest list that has included British World War II leader Winston Churchill, General Dwight D. Eisenhower and author Rudyard Kipling.

The El-Aurassi boasts 455 rooms, many of them with panoramic views over downtown Algiers and the Mediterranean Sea.

It also rises above the headquarters of the Algerian government - one of three targets hit by suicide bombers on April 11 that left 30 dead and 220 injured, in an attack claimed by Al-Qaeda’s branch in north Africa.

Both hotels are popular with foreign visitors, although recent guests agree they could do with a face-lift.

The investment promotion ministry, which is inviting the tenders, said bidders should have a track record in running top-end hotels, including at least two five-star properties in cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants.

Lundi 21 mai 2007 -- Le Salon international du tourisme et des voyages (Sitev) s’est ouvert hier au Palais des Expositions des Pins-Maritimes (Alger) sous le thème du «tourisme culturel au service du développement durable» et durera jusqu’au 24 mai. Un aspect que l’Algérie veut particulièrement promouvoir en se basant sur la diversification géographique et historique du pays. Le salon a été inauguré par le ministre du Tourisme, Noureddine Moussa, en présence de plusieurs ambassadeurs et surtout une présence de la presse étrangère.

Certainement pour faire valoir le riche potentiel exposé en vue de la promotion de l’image positive du tourisme algérien. C’est une rencontre qui permettra également aux opérateurs algériens et étrangers de nouer des relations d’affaires. Plusieurs participants internationaux, représentant 16 pays, ont pris part à cette manifestation. Il est cependant impératif de souligner que cette édition se tient dans un contexte de relance illustrée par la mise en place de la stratégie de développement du tourisme durable.

L’attrait de la destination Algérie s’exprime de manière plus importante selon le premier responsable du secteur qui a souligné que son secteur «est en train d’expérimenter des destinations quasiment ignorées jusqu’ici». La nouvelle édition du Sitev met en évidence également le potentiel historique et culturel du Nord algérien comme les vestiges remontant à l’époque romaine.
