i grown up in western culture (some special mix of catholic, ex-socialism and influence of the (TV)american culture). when i was 5 my father died so i never really known anything about the algerian culture...My mom is very feministic woman too.
at school, in the mass media.. i always heard about the inferior status of the muslim women. i heard that woman means nothing in islam. i heard it from educated persons. a part of me never believed that. i found it a prejudice.
girls (not men), could u sincerly tell me about this things. is that really so bad?

It is as true as it can be. But not because of Islam. It is because of the rotten corrupted traditions.Originally posted by anka

well anka.. im a muslim women and here i am to answer u...
what samir said is the base of muslim womne being oppressed... its not islam that oppresses women.. its other ethinicities culture.
i wear hijab and i chose to on my own... in fact my parents didnt really want me to start wearing hijab when i did... but i did it anyway
ALL my aunts (i have 8 aunts on my moms side :P ) live in Algeria and have HIGH jobs... i mean like doctors... buisness owners... one is even a judge... (personally i think the highest job is a mother...
but u get what im saying)
how can a muslim women mean nothing in Islam when there are SOOO much hadiths (sayings of the Prophet, saws) that has given the women such high positions...
One of the Prophets (SAWS) wife was the protector of the quran... the first person to join islam is a women...
i have a cd set that u can buy online called the mothers of the believers.... its about the wives of the Prophet(SAWS) and its WONDERFUL!!!! its by suhaib webb.. i would def recommend it
there are many books about women in islam... hamza yusuf is a very good speaker...try to find stuff from him
if u want other questions answered feel free to do ask

I would add:
when our prophet saaws decided to move to Madina, he asked for men support but also for women support and aggreement.. Isn't that a proof of the great value of a woman's 'voice'
