I have seen in western movies,
a red Indian places a gold pendant around the bride's neck,
    at the timeof marriage.
This is their sign of marriage.

Compare this with the compulsory practice of wearing
a special gold pendant called "mangal sutra"
to be worn by the Indian bride.

Any connection between the west & east Indians before Columbus?

Totally agree Phylay. My mother still wears it though. She is a traditionalist to the bones...

When you look at a young man/woman,
aren't you curious to know whether he/she is married or not?
