Hello salaam alaikum,
I am an English women visiting algiers shortly but where I am going there is no washroom. I know of a hammam near to where I will be going but I have also been told that there are public showers for women over there. Do any of you know if that is true and where they are?
Also someone told me that there was a leisure centre with swimming pool in algiers that is just for women. Do any of you know where that is?
I will be grateful for your answers.

Hi,old mcdonald,I used to live in Algiers few years back,I know of several hammams spread all over the city,(pretty good I must say),that cater for women, you'll find there what you need and more.As for the leisure centre exclusively for ladies only,it does exist indeed,it is in french"le centre sportif feminin de ben aknoune",it is located in the outskirts of algiers,a couple of miles away from the city centre,in it you'll find all the modern amenities are provided for(swimming pool,gym,.......).Enjoy your stay.

Hello kay205
Thanks for your reply. I have never been to hammam but my husband says that it is just like a sauna and there is not really any place where you can have a good wash in private. From what I have been told everyone sits round in a big room and washes together! What do you think, (as it sounds like you have been in a hammam) would I have a bit of privacy there? I don't know if you are english but if you are you may remember years ago that in england we used to have public baths, where you could pay to go in a little room with a bath and wash. So I was hoping for something a little like that.
As for the leisure centre, thanks very much, my husband didn't believe me but I shall be visiting that when i go.
Just one more thing, seeing as you lived there before, do you know of any english speaking primary schools (apart from the one in Al-bier, which is breath-takenly expensive) in algiers?
many thanks again

The hammam isn't a place where you will have much privacy so I advise you wear a swimsuit if you go.
There is another swiming pool nearer to central Algiers. It is called 'Groupe Laique' and is in Chemin Neuf just next door to the market. They have women-only days which are really good and there is even a little terrace where you can sunbathe
They used to do the women-only days on Saturday, but it may have changed so I would actually go there and check.
Hope you have a lovely time.-When the world pushes you to your knees, you are in the perfect position to pray.

Hi again old mcdonald,I am not sure there is an all english speaking primary school in algiers, but then again I might be wrong, your best bet would be, the international schools wich teach in several languages, english amongst others, there is a saudi school that teaches the american cursus(leading to an american diploma),I assume, it is in english,it is on the expensive side though.I'll try to get some more informations and keep you posted.Good look.

There are many good quality hotels with their own gyms and their own swimmings pools , and there are Clubs where you can have a Day pass . I have been a few years ago and what you are describing is in the Very far countrside places . not in ALgiers city . you could try the Sheraton , Al Jazair or other good quality hotels .

There is a pretty good international school, where foreign kids are taken care of from primary,to high school level.Students are put in different sections, depending on whether they are ,french, english, spanish speakers. The system of education there, is on the higher side of the spectrum at least equal if not superior to what they are going to get in the uk,it is designed to enable foreign students to continue their studies in theire respective countries when they leave Algeria. The name of the school:MUSTAPHA KHALEF,it is located(coincidence!!!)in Ben aknoune, not far from the leisure centre,I mentioned in the previous posting,it is opposite the faculte of law,you can't miss it.Good luck.
