ALGIERS, August 9, 2007 - A growing number of Algerian women are reportedly choosing to follow Muslim tradition and wear a headscarf.
According to statistics published in the local daily, El-Khabar, 50 percent of women in Algeria's big cities wear a headscarf while more than 97 percent wear it in the country.
The headscarf has undergone a revival since the 1970s and 1980s but has become a divisive issue in Algeria recently as many women have complained about suffering discrimination when looking for work.
The daily newspaper said foreign companies cannot handle women wearing the headscarf in their offices. As for local companies and public offices, women wearing headscarves aren't always viewed favourably.
A few months ago president Abdelaziz Bouteflika provoked a fierce debate when he said "the headscarf is not a national dress".
In Algerian cities there are those who support the headscarf and those who do not, while in desert areas almost all the women are completely covered with nothing but their eyes visible.

Ukht - haha, i was just gonna quote the article and laugh at the word "tradition".... everyone who is confused about that - hijab is fard!!! Meaning obligatory. But you can't start wearing it until you are 100% ready cuz when you do you'll automatically start representing the Islamic Ummah... and if you do something shifty, whoever sees you will think all Muslims do that....
yeah, but Alhamdulilah x 100000000000000 for the women in Algeria, 3ou2bal all the Muslim women in the world
NEVER grow up

Yes, ukhti,
alhamdulillah, you have to be sure to wear hijaab and at the same time follow the pillars of Islam. Lots of women wear hijaab but still don't pray....it doesn't really make sense isn't it? Wearing hijaab is for Allah subhana wa'a ta'la and nobody else.
Some muslim women came to me lately asking advice about hijaab. And my question was: do u pray 5 times a day? Make sure you follow the second pillar of Islam: Salah. So that your imaan can grow and make another step insh'Allah: HIJAAB!

"And stay quietly in your houses, and make not a dazzling display, like that of the former Times of Ignorance; and establish regular Prayer, and give regular Charity; and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah only wishes to remove all abomination from you, ye Members of the Family, and to make you pure and spotless."Al-Ahzab v.33
