I have met an Algerian man from Algeirs online. We have fallen in love. He is recently seperated from his wife and still is wearing the wedding band , as his divorce has been finalised yet.Obviously warning bells are ringing in my head.He is very educated and speaks English well, travels internationally for his business. How can I find out weather he is telling the truth.!! I want to beleive him but I have the doubt. What is it like for a Western woman in Algeirs, the capital. I am wandering if I could ever live there, if our relationship ever develops. I dont speak French or Arabic!...I cant find out much about the country on the net either..Also the phone system is unreliable!..I never thought I could fall in love online......!!

Hi Jasmine,
I feel ur situation i know it's pretty tough 4 u specially that u don't know the guy that well. u just know what he's told you. Anyway if u really love this man and u want to be with him u should give it a try and get to know him more! i mean closely if he ever asks you 2 marry him. Go 4 it but in one condition which is to go live with him in Algeria for a little while. You won't regret it believe me!! u have nothing to lose. Algeria is a beautiful country and we have nice people out there i'm sure u'll love it. And don't u worry about the language.. Language is easy to learn. Keep this in mind Algeria is not like England or America or whatever u from.. what i mean by that is he won't be able 2 mess with ya and play u around. If he marries you that means u will both living together and u will get to see his family and get closer to them( and i'm sure they will respect and love u) . If u feel like he is not the right guy 4 u. yu can always hit back to ur country which i doubt it! .... i don't know if u will understand what i mean!! I'm sure that u think that staying in ur country is safer which i totally agree with but the point is u will never be sure that he married becoz he loved u (there will be other factors involved if u know what i mean)) >>

I'm living in algeria and I'm seeing western women walking in the street without problem. Years ago it wasnt safe at all for anyone algerian or foreigner. Now hadmoullah it's ok.
Wish you the best.

Hi there,
I'm from the UK, been to Algeria twice, and in my opinion, in Alger it's fairly acceptable for western women to be walking about. When I went I didn't meet any other British ladies, but met some French and Americans. It may have been different for me as I was accompanied by my husband and his family who are Algerian. I dressed fairly modestly, although I noticed far more Algerian ladies wearing less than me! It's perfectly normal to walk around wearing jeans and t-shirt/jacket, or longer skirts. Maybe I'm just saying that because I try not to draw too much attention to myself (I'm blonde and fair in complexion!).
Hope this reassures you a bit. I found that most people were so busy going about their daily lives that they really couldn't care less about who's around them. When you travel along the coast in some of the more rural areas, that's when you stand out a little more, but people remain fairly hospitable.
Sacha
