Posing the question in terms of the current taboos and double standards existing for women in Algeria....
Do young women want to be treated completely like women appear to be treated in the West or a mix of the existing Algerian cultural practises with western standards such as more control over marriage/working/ having boyfriends/equality etc...???
help me out here ladies as am hoping to be in Algeria early nxt year to do film.
so i want a frank and full discussion!![]()

before you ask an algerian woman if she wants to be treated like a western woman, perhaps you should ask a western woman how she would like to be treated FIRST

got ur point and already there....but the docu is not about western women it is about algerian women. As a mixed woman myself who reverted back to Islam on finding out her true heritage i don't feel the need to examine the shallowness of the west! i am more interested in how the east sees itself emerging in a forever more global colonialism that threatens women in the east just as much as the western women already think the east are...if u can follow my thread great...sorry if losing my explanation a little. i am very tired from being up late with funding proposals.Originally posted by dizzy_wizzy

i apologize for that.
hope funding comes through for you.
as for input. ummm..i'll leave it up to the algerian girls to help you with that.
as long as everyone remembers that there are reasons behind every action then im happy with that.
i know it will take a while. but when it gets to the big screen i will recognize it immediately im sure

salaams,
ok well im an algerian women living in the west and ive gone back many times to algeria (just this past summer too) and heres my input...
algeria does have good traditional practices... such as the observance of hijab, or headscarf, but....
the mentality of algerians is what needs to change...
for example... when my cousin goes to tunisia with her family for vacation, she is allowed to stay up all she wants... go wherever she wants, do whatever she wants...
when they are back in algeria... she is not allowed to be out past maghrib alone because her father feels that algerians do not have the same mentality as tunisians.. which is true....
the algerian mentality really needs to change.... at least in constantine they do.. becuase in algeirs they are a bit better... i have female cousins there who go out alone at night and its totally normal than in constantine..
double standards REALLY need to change... it annoys the living hell out of me...
why is it ok that a guy can talk to a girl all he wants but as soon as he sees his own sister talking to a guy.... he freaks out... does he not realize that the brother of the girl he is talking to also will probably freak out on him as well... ???
i guess this is as much as i can think abt right now... i dont have time to elaborate more on them.. but next time inshallah...
take care

I agree!
Mentality needs to change, and people need to change.. an Algerian friend of mine once said "In order for Algeria to change we need to burn it down & start again" Maybe a bit extreme but he's got a point.

i like that...burn it down and start again
I don't mean i literall y like it and think so. obviously i have seen Dz for myself having lived there for a short period of time and having been married to Algerian, i totally get the double standards thing.
it used to drive me crazy with the family how they contradict themselves...for example, my husband was very against hijab (i don't hijab btw, but no problem with those that do) and even said "if u want wear hijab find new husband"! yet two of his sisters wear hijab...one sister out of her own choice and other sister her husband's choice. So how can he be opposed? weird.
many thanx for taking time to reply btw...bit surprised not more contribution by our sisters out there...trying to make voices heard, little difficult if they don't participate...something that seems to be problem with some Algerians. maybe i am wrong and everyone just busy...
am i roght girls?
