Chechnya’s Supreme Court has sentenced a citizen of Algeria, Buharli Kamelo, to 20 years for robbery, kidnapping and membership in criminal gangs, a source in court told ITAR-TASS news agency Monday.

According to the source, the Algerian mercenary had been detained in 2004 in Dagestan, where he was receiving medical treatment after being wounded. He had been a member of criminal gang lead by Abu-al-Valid — an infamous Chechen warlord who was killed a year earlier.

Before his “mission” to Chechnya, Kamelo lived in Great Britain and regularly visited Afghanistan, where he allegedly had passed a “course” in a terrorist training camp. Earlier the Algerian had been convicted for armed attacks and robberies in France and Algeria.

During the first interrogation, the Algerian gave up all the members of the group in which he took part, and the gang was consequently annihilated in the Kurchalov region of Chechnya. Among those members killed was a Canadian citizen, Halil Rudwan, who had entered Russia with a tourist visa, according to ITAR-TASS.

No compatriots or relatives have come forward to defend the militant in the closed-door trial, the source said.
