April 26, 2010 -- Rotterdam city council has been told by the social security appeal court it must house a 62-year-old homeless asylum seeker from Algeria, the Telegraaf reports on Monday. Earlier this month, a judge in Utrecht ordered that city authority to find a home for a mother and three children who have failed in their request for asylum but cannot, or will not, return home. Since the beginning of this year, local councils have been forced to close all their emergency accommodation for failed asylum seekers who have been evicted from refugee centres. Campaigners hope the legal challenges will encourage the government to become more flexible. Trouw reported earlier this month that up to 50% of failed asylum seekers are now on the streets.
