April 3, 2011 -- Tunisian women will be allowed to wear a headscarf in ID photographs, TAP quoted the interior ministry as saying on Saturday (April 2nd). "This measure is right in line with reforms undertaken with a mind to promoting the principles and values of the Tunisian revolution (in January) and to guaranteeing the effective respect of public and civil liberties," the statement said. Also Saturday, at a meeting with interim Prime Minister Béji Caïd Essebsi, Tunisian-born French lawyer and politician Gisèle Halimi stressed the importance of preserving the status of the nation's women. "The Personal Status Code guarantees Tunisian women's fully-fledged citizenship status," TAP quoted Halimi as saying.
