April 29, 2011 -- The 7th annual conference of Arab human rights institutions wrapped up Thursday (April 28th) in Nouakchott. United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay told delegates at the Mauritanian summit that such national institutions are an essential tool for protecting human rights. The UN official also stressed the need for an independent judiciary, a vibrant civil society, and a free and responsible press, AMI reported. Participants from Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Qatar and Jordan attended the event.
