Outdoor Activities in Algeria
There are a small number of outdoor activities in Algeria that can be enjoyed by tourists and other visitors. The vast majority of these are offered by the various hotels and resorts and take the form of conventional recreation activities such as swimming, tennis or playing golf. Though you may be able to enjoy the beach at Algiers, you are unlikely to shed much clothing in lieu of the strict Muslim dress code that is sometimes followed to a lesser degree in the city. Other than the few commonplace outdoor activities offered at hotels, there is very little on offer in Algeria.
The main reason for this is that, because of internal strife and conflict experienced in certain parts of the country, tourism has been largely discouraged. As a result there has been little development of outdoor activities that may appeal to the tourist. This does not mean, however, that there is absolutely nothing to do in Algeria and, given half the opportunity, you will find a small variety of other outdoor activities available in Algeria. Although the majority of activities are enjoyed on resort or hotel grounds, your tour operator in Algeria may be able to organize something a bit more exciting for you.
If you have ideas of trekking through the Sahara either on camel or on foot, you should be warned that this action is not strongly recommended. Even if you find a dependable guide, the more remote areas of the country are unguarded and as such, the level of terrorist activity in these parts is not as well monitored as it may be in other parts of Algeria. Outdoor activities in Algeria such as 4x4 trails, game spotting or camel rides may sound tempting but are not highly recommended due to the safety issues mentioned above. Travelers are much safer if they stick to the various tourist Mecca's that are suggested to them by their travel agents.
