Taher, a Tripoli resident who has taken up arms with his neighbours in support of the rebels, spoke with Al Jazeera from his courtyard on Sunday morning, as automatic gunfire echoed outside. He said the men in his neighbourhood, near Bab al-Aziziyah, a command and control center for Muammar Gaddafi, had protested last night and blocked the roads in their area. They are armed with AK-47s and some rocket-propelled grenades, he said. This morning, 30 or 40 security troops arrived and opened fire with heavy machine and 14.5mm antiaircraft guns. Some have taken positions on the nearby rooftops of an eye clinic and the Nigerian embassy.
