The Monument of Martyrs is a towering emblem of Algiers' citizens who fought and died for freedom from French rule. Its opening exhibition in 1982 observed the 20th anniversary of Algiers' independence. Constructed as three standing palm leaves, the concrete edifice shelters the city's eternal flame. Each palm leaf's base is guarded by a statue of an Algerian soldier to express the city's great struggle.
