Algeria ~ Tassili N'Ajjer Camel Trek [06:31]
In January 2013 four of us trekked along the base of the Tassili plateau to Essendilene canyon and back, covering about 200km in 2 weeks. The music is by the late Djanet musician Othmane Bali - 'Kel Akalin' which I believe translates from Tamachek as 'Countryman' or 'People of [kel] the Country'. I came across it on the mostly great 'Desert Blues' double CD several years ago. After the camels we also walked for a week with donkeys up on the better known plateau among the prehistoric rock art galleries. That's a slideshow for later.

Tassili n'Ajjer (Berber: Tasili n Ajjer, meaning "Plateau of the Rivers"; Arabic: طاسيلي ناجر‎) is a mountain range in the Algerian section of the Sahara Desert. It is a vast plateau in south-east Algeria at the borders of Libya and Niger, covering an area of 72000 km2. The range is also noted for its prehistoric rock art and other ancient archaeological sites, dating from Neolithic times when the local climate was more moist, with savannah rather than desert. It is not older than 9-10 millennia, according to OSL dating of associated sediments, but could be younger.[1] The art depicts herds of cattle, large wild animals including crocodiles, and human activities such as hunting and dancing. The art has strong stylistic links to the pre-Nguni Art of South Africa and the region, executed in caves by the San Peoples before the year 1200 BCE. The range's exceptional density of rock art paintings-pictograms and engravings-petroglyphs, and the presence of many prehistoric vestiges, are remarkable testimonies to Neolithic prehistory. From 10000 BCE to the first centuries CE, successive peoples left many archaeological remains, habitations, burial mounds and enclosures which have yielded abundant lithic and ceramic material. However, it is the rock art (engravings and paintings) that have made Tassili world famous as from 1933, the date of its discovery. 15000 petroglyphs have been identified to date. Extrait de Cinq colonnes à la une - 03/11/1963 Alors que de violents affrontements viennent d'avoir lieu entre les armées algériennes et marocaines dans la palmeraie de FIGUIG, Pierre DESGRAUPES fait le point sur le plateau avec deux journalistes de CINQ COLONNES A LA UNE, Pierre MIGNOT et Pierre KORALNIK qui mettent en cause la véracité des affirmations du président algérien Ahmed BEN BELLA le 1er novembre dernier, selon lesquelles les troupes algériennes étaient déjà présentes à FIGUIG une semaine auparavant (soit le 26 octobre 1963). ITW des deux journalistes : "Nous sommes arrivés le 26 octobre, transportés par l'armée marocaine, nous étions à proximité du barrage de barbelés.. On pouvait voir circuler les convois militaires algériens et même à la jumelle des pièces d'artillerie... Quand nous avons quitté dans la soirée du 26, l'armée marocaine tenait FIGUIG. Le 27, plusieurs communications téléphoniques avec FIGUIG, aucune de demandait ne renfort ou ne parlait d'une attaque."Reportage au Maroc.
