Conservation of the Tassili n Ajjer Mountains, National Park, Sahara Desert

Most national parks and reserves are created to protect and conserve a designated area, to ensure the future of bio-diverse systems and to provide the animals with a safe environment to live in, guaranteeing the survival of hundreds of species. The Tassili n'Ajjer National Park is unique in the respect of it being created to conserve a mountain range and is not only a national park, but a World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve. This unique natural attraction in Algeria is located in the Sahara Desert in the southeastern region of Algeria.

The magnificent Tassili n’Ajjer mountain range can be easily reached from the beautiful town of Djanet. Due to its location in the breathtaking desert regions of the country, the mountain range is mostly comprised of sandstone, allowing the Saharan winds to carve spectacular landforms and rock arches. The sandstone composition however, has very good water holding features, allowing the vegetation to grow lush landscapes and woodlands that are home to Saharan Myrtle and Saharan Cypress which are both endangered species. The reason that the Tassili n’Ajjer National Park is also a World Heritage Site, is because of the fact that the Tassili n’Ajjer mountains are home to ancient archeological sites and prehistoric rock paintings. The rock paintings closely resemble those found in South Africa, done by the San People, and depict stories with human activities and a wide variety of animals.

The Tassili n’Ajjer National Park gives visitors the opportunity to discover the wonders of the desert, while exploring the unique mountain range and its rare features. This is definitely an attraction that visitors should not miss out on, as it is as beautiful as it is fascinating.
