  • "Songs from the Uproar" - premiere in NYC, 9/24/12

    Venue Dates & Times

    Trailer:

The story: Isabelle Eberhardt was a young explorer originally from Switzerland. She traveled to North Africa at the end of the 19th century and became fascinated by the culture there. She dressed as a man to be able to travel freely and ended up converting to Islam and joined a Sufi sect. Eberhardt was also an aspiring writer and left behind several journals about her travels. “Song from the Uproar” is inspired by those journals. The opera is the brainchild of New York composer Missy Mazzoli, who worked on it with filmmaker Stephen Taylor.

PRI Interview: Anchor Lisa Mullins speaks with Mazzoli about the short yet extraordinary life of Isabelle Eberhardt.
