Exploration / exploitation of mines in Algeria

Iron ore production in Algeria amounted to 1.667.155 tons during 2005 of which 1.321.333 tons were produced by Mittal Steel company which owns 70% of Al Wenza and Bou Khadra mines privatized in 2001. These two mines are of the first mines exploited in Algeria since 1924 and 1927, but the remaining part of iron ore production, which is estimated by 345.822 tons, is produced by SOMIFAR company belonging to Ferphos Group, belong to Societe de Gestion Participation Mines (SOMINES) controlling mining activities in Algeria.

Development of production of iron ore during the years 2002 – 2005 reveals a continuous growing of iron ore production to meet the growing consumption of both steel and cement industries, in addition to opening some of the small mines. The rise of the production of both Al Wenza and Bou Khadra mines in the period 2002 – 2005 amounted to 25%. Production rose from 1.056.584 tons up to 1.321.333 tons. During the same period SOMIFAR production rose by 39%. Its production rose from 245 thousand tons in 2002 up to 346 thousand tons in 2005.

ALGIERS, April 29, 2011 (AFP) -- Algeria's output of crude oil and natural gas fell by 3.9 percent last year, the National Office of Statistics (ONS) announced Friday. Nevertheless the ONS said the energy sector put in a "good performance" with 5.6 growth overall, mainly due to 25.4 percent jump in refining of crude oil. Production of liquefied natural gas dropped by 12 percent, the ONS said in a report on industrial production. The mining and quarries sectors also declined, by 3.3 percent, mainly due to a fall in the production of raw stone, clay and sand and salt. The fall was also triggered by a 27 percent drop in the production of iron ore. By contrast, the extraction of phosphates and minerals grew by 43 percent and 11.9 percent respectively, after declines of 40.9 percent and 32.4 percent the previous year. Overall, industrial output in the national public sector fell by 2.6 percent in 2010. Besides energy, the wood and paper sector bucked the trend with a 14.8 percent gain.

MONTREAL, April 13, 2011 -- Cancor Mines is pleased to provide an update on the exploration of Tirek North, one of its four gold properties in Algeria. Exploration activities on the Kiouene gold field continue to demonstrate the potential for a large volume of mineralized material, as many grains of visible gold have been observed on small outcrops between the known veins. The presence of visible gold in these previously unexplored areas suggests that significant gold mineralization in certain areas may be much more extensive than was previously understood. The known veins on the Kiouene gold field, which are located 100 to 300 meters apart, have been the focus of all previous exploration work. In the current program, in order to test the potential between the known veins, several trenches and major cuts have been completed between the known veins. As a result of this work, outcrops containing vein-type material with visible gold grains have been observed and identified in several locations. These findings confirm that the auriferous environment is not limited to the known veins but is much more extensive and appears to offer exceptional potential for open pit mining.

Under the current program on the Tirek North property, in addition to geological mapping being completed, 90 trenches have been opened up or newly dug; some 1,049 samples have been collected by channel and grab sampling; and nine major cuts ranging between 200 and 700 meters were completed, two by mechanical shovel, the others by manual digging. Many visible gold grains were also observed in the trenches. All known goldfields and veins on Tirek North have been visited and sampled. These samples are being analyzed by OMAC Laboratories in Ireland. Cancor expects to receive the test results shortly. Mr. Jacques Marchand, independent geological engineer and qualified person as defined in NI 43-101, has overseen the exploration program. Mr. Marchand established the sampling procedures, and he will publish a compliant report on the Tirek North property toward the end of June 2011. This report will define the subsequent work program and surveys planned for the fall of 2011 and winter of 2012.

The Tirek North licence covers an area of 98,990 hectares (989 km2). The perimeter of Tirek North is on the eastern edge of the In Ouzzal mole, which consists of a band of mylonites between 300 and 3,000 metres thick corresponding to a major tectonic deformation rift. This tectonic zone controls the emplacement of numerous vein-type gold showings, including the two gold deposits at Tirek and Amessmessa, located 17 and 70 km south of the southern boundary of the licence respectively. The Amessmessa deposit is currently in production. The gold-bearing veins are grouped together into eight vein-type gold fields within the boundaries of the Tirek North licence. From south to north, these are the Kheima showing, the gold fields known as Zone 12, Zone 13, and Zone 17, the Syenite showing, the Kiouene gold field, the South Site, and gold field Number Three.

The Kiouene gold field, the most important one, had been prospected by Algerian and Russian teams and more than 400 trenches were completed. The field was found to contain 80 veins, 45 of which are auriferous. This gold field extends for over 7000 m in length and 2000 m in width. Based on historical data the 6 richest portions have thicknesses ranging from 0.6 to 1.5 m, lengths ranging from 40 to 320 m, and mean grades of the samples vary between 5.4 and 9.6 g/t Au. In addition, a strong geochemical anomaly suggests the presence of blind veins under a shallow overburden. Cancor holds a 100% interest in the North Tirek property through a prospection license acquired in 2008. The North Tirek property straddles a major fault associated with numerous extensive surface and near-surface gold showings which appear to offer exceptional potential for open pit mining.

    Quality control

Follow up on the exploration program is carried out by Cancor employees under the supervision of Mr. Jacques Marchand, engineer, independent geologist and qualified person (as defined by National Instrument 43-101) with more than 35 years of experience in exploration. Mr. A. Chaouche, an Algerian consulting geologist, accredited by the Algerian Ministry of Energy and Mines and working in close collaboration with Mr. Marchand, is in charge of the channel sampling process including the preparation and transport of the samples to OMAC Laboratories in Ireland, an internationally accredited laboratory.

April 13, 2011 -- Terramin Australia will decide whether or not to go ahead with its $589 million Algerian zinc and lead mining project in May, the company said. Terramin said its executive chairman Kevin Moriarty had been in Algeria during the past week, meeting with the Algerian Government joint venture partners in the project. "During the meetings, the government joint venture partner indicated that the review by its consultants of the definitive feasibility study (DFS) would be concluded by the end of April," Terramin said. "They have requested some additional information to complete the report, and Terramin will provide immediate access to its consultants. Both parties agreed to meet in early May to consider a decision to mine."

If it is developed, the Tala Hamza project on the Algerian coast would be among the six largest zinc mines in the world. Terramin has so far estimated it would take 57 months to build, meaning it would not be in production until late 2015, however Dr Moriarty has said he is confident this time line can be tightened considerably. The mine is expected to produce 164,000 tonnes of zinc and 36,000 tonnes of lead per year, for 12 years. The Tala Hamza project is 65 per cent owned by Terramin, with the remaining stake held by two Algerian state-owned companies. Terramin's annual report, released earlier this week, showed Dr Moriarty received $508,420 in remuneration last year. Greg Cochran, who served as chief executive for less than seven months, was paid $476,661, including a $218,000 termination benefit.

    Merouane Mokdad :

ALGIERS, December 7, 2010 (Reuters) -- Algeria said on Monday it would set up a mining group to consolidate state-owned assets in the sector. The announcement, made by Energy and Mines Minister Youcef Yousfi, appeared to be part of a government policy of giving a greater role to domestic firms and creating state-run national champions in strategic sectors of the economy. "We will create a mines group. There is a huge development programme for this sector," Yousfi told a conference in the Algerian capital. Gold miner GMA Resources and zinc miner Terramin Australia are the biggest foreign investors in Algerian mining since the government opened the sector to foreign investment in 2001. GMA has been operating the Amesmessa-Tirek mine, Algeria's main gold mine, while Terramin has started exploiting a zinc and lead mine.

OPEC member Algeria is a major exporter of oil and gas but its mining sector is under developed. It is potentially attractive to investors because of its close proximity to European markets. The country mines mostly gold, zinc and iron. The government has over the past years launched several licensing rounds allowing foreign firms, including many from China, to acquire mining concessions in partnership with local firms. Under Algerian law, the stake a foreign company can hold in any investment is limited at 49 percent. Foreign investors have been operating in Algeria in partnership with several small, state-owned mining companies overseen by National Agency of Mining Patrimony, a department at the energy and mines ministry.

MONTREAL, QUEBEC, November 3, 2010 -- Cancor Mines Inc. is pleased to announce that exploration activity has resumed on its gold properties in Algeria. The current program consists of intensive trenching and channel sampling to be carried out on the North Tirek property. Initially the program will focus on the Kiouene gold field where Cancor is planning to complete one hundred trenches on the known gold veins in sectors with a high gold potential. The program will then continue on other gold fields located within the North Tirek property. The Kiouene gold field extends for over 7,000 m in length and 2,000 m in width and was originally prospected in the 1970s by Algerian and Russian teams who completed more than 380 trenches. This historical work identified 80 veins, 45 of which are auriferous. Based on this historical data the 6 richest portions have thicknesses ranging from 0.6 to 1.5 m, lengths ranging from 40 to 320 m, and mean grades of the samples vary between 5.4 and 9.6 g/t Au. In addition, a strong geochemical anomaly suggests the presence of blind veins under a shallow overburden.

Recent work by Cancor on the North Tirek property comprised geological reconnaissance of the license, GPS surveying of most of the existing trenches, and channel sampling of some of them, particularly in the Kheima, Syenite and Kiouene Goldfields. Numerous visible gold specks were observed in the trenches. A total of 13 channel samples were collected and sent to an accredited laboratory in Ireland for gold and silver analysis (July 22, 2010 Press Release). The results were excellent, confirming the high grade values reported by the former explorers. Cancor holds a 100% interest in the North Tirek property through a prospection license acquired in 2008. The North Tirek property straddles for a distance of 65 kilometres a major fault associated with numerous extensive surface and near-surface gold showings which appear to offer exceptional potential for open pit mining. The assay results provided below are historical in nature.

The Kheima gold field - This field, which is the immediate extension of the Djazairia gold field to the south which is currently being developed by GMA Resources, contains quartz gold veins which run discontinuously for more than 500 m. A 75 m long and 2.04 m wide mineralized portion gave an average grade of 21.0 g/t Au.

The Zone 13 gold field consists of 11 veins with a thickness varying between 0.3 and 2.0 m. Veins 1 and 2 are located approximately 300 m apart in the southern portion of the zone, and show continuous auriferous mineralization over distances of 60 and 120 metres, with average grades of 11.6 g/t Au for vein 1 and 15.8 g/t Au for vein 2.

The Syenite gold field consists of a vein structure arrayed in echelons over a length of more than 600 metres. Two portions of 106 m and 34 m, with respective widths of 0.3 m and 1.94 m, gave an average grade of 10.73 g/t Au and 9.51 g/t Au respectively.

The South gold field is in the immediate extension of the Kiouene gold field. Of the 36 veins discovered, two have mineralized portions: the West Vein, or Vein 1; and the East Vein, or Vein 2. The average grade of the samples in Vein 1 is 3.21 g/t Au over a length of 64 m with a thickness of 1.1 m; while Vein 2 measures 60 m in length over a mean thickness of 1.98 m, with an average grade of 15.59 g/t Au.

Number Three gold field in the northern portion of the licence area is at least 500 m in length, with grades ranging between 0.7 and 116.4 g/t. The richest portion has an average grade of 9.66 g/t Au and a thickness of 1.22 m over a length of 174 m.

    Quality control

The exploration program is being carried out by Cancor employees under the supervision of Kamil Khobzi, Eng., M.Sc., the President and CEO of the Company. Mr. Khobzi is a qualified person (as defined by National Instrument 43-101) with more than 34 years of experience in exploration. Mr. A. Chaouche, an Algerian consulting geologist, accredited by the Algerian Ministry of Energy and Mines, will be responsible for collecting the channel samples and supervising their preparation and transport to OMAC Laboratories in Ireland which is a recognized laboratory with international accreditation.

In the 1970s, samples from the North Tirek property were sent to the SONAREM (now ORGM) laboratory in Tamanrasset. To the best of the author's knowledge, the analysis methods used at the time were spectrographic powder assaying and the Sofranov method. These methods are no longer used by recognized laboratories. For this reason, the author cannot pronounce judgment on the relevance and quality of the methods used during the exploration campaigns of previous years by the Russian and Algerian teams. However, the author is of the opinion that the historical results given above provide a conceptual indication of the sector's potential, and that they are relevant for the purposes of geological evaluation.
