Festival of Comics 2010

Many talented cartoonists have come out of Algeria, with names such as “Slim”, Haroun and Ali Dilem coming to mind. These are the artists that see a light side to a dark situation, who uplift the spirits of everyday citizens and dare to poke fun at political leaders and situations. Their dedication to their work has landed a few of them in hot water, but they contribute greatly to the world of art, as well as to daily lives of many. This year, from the 13th to the 17th of October 2010, Riadh El-Feth, in Algiers, will be hosting the third Festival of Comics.

The Festival of Comics is a massive networking platform for cartoonists from all over the world, and many attend from as far as the United States, Morocco, Congo, Cuba and Tunisia. It is where ideas and creativity are exchanged, and industry members are able to explore the development of the art in other countries. The festival is also hosted to generate interest amongst the younger generation, and to assist them in exploring their talents and skills. Up and coming cartoonists have the opportunity to gain valuable advice from those who have been in the industry for years. A massive exhibition of cartoonists’ work is on display throughout the festival, and there are trophies and cash prizes to be won in the various categories. Cartoonists of all ages are encouraged to enter, as there are divisions for children between the ages of nine and sixteen, and a student category for cartoonists between the ages of eighteen and thirty-five. The work entered into the competitions must be original pieces that have been done in either in 2009 or 2010, and can be both published and unpublished work.

Over and above the exhibitions and competitions, the Festival of Comics also offers fascinating talks in regard to the cartoonist field, educational workshops and international conferences that feature a host of guest speakers. The festival pays tribute to cartoonists from around the globe and at this year’s event, Algerian cartoonist, Haroun, will be honored for his dedication and contributions. It is a festival of color, fun and entertainment, and an event that is growing in popularity each year.
