El-Oued Museum, Museums, Algeria

El-Oued in Algeria is often referred to as the "Pearl of the Sahara" or the "City of a Thousand Domes", and visitors to this picturesque oasis town soon come to appreciate why. With its domed whitewashed buildings surrounded by date palms and greenery, El-Oued in the Saharan Algeria Region of the country is a popular tourist destination. The El-Oued Museum (Musée d’El Oued) located in the town is a good place to start if you want to gain some insight into the history and culture of the town and its people.

Although the El-Oued Museum is small, it is packed with information and items of interest. Of particular interest is the collection of sand roses, also referred to as desert rose and rose rock. Sand roses are found in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors, depending on the sand structure, and no two sand roses are ever identical. They can vary in size from around one centimeter across, to large rose clusters exceeding one meter in diameter.

There is quite a lot to see and do in the town of El-Oued, which is renowned for its shopping opportunities, but visitors may want to take some time out to visit the El-Oued Museum to view some of the unusual items on display, including the beautifully delicate sand roses.
