My experience may be somewhat outdated by now (almost two years ago), but I managed to do the first part in a week (although I can understand why they recommend two weeks, as the administration over there tends to be rather slow), and then went back to the UK until the permission came through... so basically you don't have to stay in Algeria the whole time.

uk spouse visa
hi salam everyone
can anyone help plz
i was an overstayer in the uk since 2004; i was granted with COA form by the home office last year so i got married in the uk then the home office kept my passport , so after i had been to few solicitors in the uk they all told me the best way to get legal is to go back to my home country to apply for spouse visa, so i request my passport back from the home office and told them that i want to leave the uk voluntarily to apply for spouse visa, so they give me my passport back and i left the uk with my british wife and my baby girl, i submit my application on the 28 november 2010, its been 7 weeks since i applied for my spouse visa, still waiting for the outcome , and now really worry if they refuse my visa on the basis that i overstayed my previous visitor visa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
is there anyone who had the same experience please help........................

how did you get on?
hi beth,
i was relieved to find someone in the same situation as me, nearly identical lol. i was just wondering how you got on with everything? we are hoping to go to algeria at the end of this year to sort things, weve been together nearly 5 years now, and had an islamic wedding 3yrs ago, very small, just us and 4 witnesses.
my man is getting extremely fed up and wants to be able to visit his family and go on holiday, so i am praying that it isnt going to be too difficult or long! im more worried about him leaving the uk! as everything has expired, his passport 2 yrs ago and his visa 4! we have no excuse for not getting it sorted, but now we are trying for a family we want everything to be sorted.
thanks
cuddles x
